Backup and restore
Using 9840 tape drives for backup and restore shortens backup and recovery times and improves system response time. The 9840 can be used in combination with other drives, including the T9940 tape drive, to match specific backup and restore performance and capacity needs.
Offline processing
Fast-access T9840 tape drives provide a cost-efficient option to disk for offline processing applications.
Fixed content distribution
Tape libraries can act as a high-volume source for fixed content data when outfitted with fast-access T9840 tape drives. When implemented with VolSafe write-once-read-many (WORM) secure media, T9840 tape drives help secure high-value fixed content while it is distributed.
Faster access to information
Faster data access enables you to meet more of your data storage needs with affordable tape, minimizing the need for higher-cost disk.
Reduced backup windows
With native data transfer rates of 30 megabytes per second, the T9840C drive allows you to store more data in less time to meet your shrinking backup windows.
Increased productivity
Higher data transfer rates enable you to reduce batch windows and improve access to data, so your IT staff can get more work done in less time.
StorageTek VolSafe media support
The T9840 drives support VolSafe cartridges, a high-capacity write-once-read-many (WORM) storage solution. VolSafe® is a non-erasable, non-rewritable tape media for archiving critical data.
Connectivity choices
The T9840 products include two-gigabit Fibre Channel, one-gigabit Fibre Channel, two-gigabit FICON, SCSI HVD, or ESCON connectivity, enabling you to choose the right connectivity for your implementation.
FICON for distance
The FICON interface drives support distances up to 100 kilometers (versus nine kilometers for ESCON) without channel extensions or significant throughput reduction. This enables remote storage applications and increases your disaster recovery options.
SAN-readiness
A native two-gigabit fabric-aware Fibre Channel interface makes the T9840C drive ready for the demands of high-speed SAN environments and storage server networks.

They’re backward compatible to three previous generations of StorageTek T9840 tape drives, provide an average file access time of 8 seconds, and can store up to 75 GB of uncompressed data on a single cartridge.

Key Benefits

  • Backward compatible
  • Store up to 75 GB on a single, reusable cartridge
  • Provides an average file access time of 8 seconds
  • Cost-effective media for volume offline storage
Media consistency

The StorageTek 9840 data cartridge is compatible with three previous generations of StorageTek T9840 tape drives.

Built to last

StorageTek 9840 data cartridges are designed to preserve data through years of the most strenuous reading, writing, and retention cycles.

Long-term, fixed-content storage

When outfitted with fast-access StorageTek T9840 tape drives and StorageTek 9840 data cartridges, tape libraries can serve as a high-volume source for a large-capacity storage device for fixed-content data. Sun StorageTek VolSafe secure media technology utilizes Write-Once-Read-Many (WORM) technology to secure high-value, fixed-content data. Together, StorageTek T9840 tape drives and StorageTek 9840 tape cartridges comprise an ideal, active archive for regulated data that has been used worldwide since 2000 to meet compliance requirements.

Increased Productivity

Less wasted time

Faster data transfer rates enable you to reduce batch windows and accelerate access to data, so your IT staff can get more work done in less time.

Faster Data Access

Smooth operator

The StorageTek 9840 tape cartridge's mid-point load design delivers an average file access time of just 8 seconds faster than with any other technology.

Sun StorageTek™ T9840C Tape Drive

With an average access time of just 12 seconds, the StorageTek™ T9840C tape drive fills the gap between high-performance disk (access in milliseconds) and traditional “capacity-centric” tape drives (typical access in one or two minutes). The T9840C tape drive is the cost-effective alternative, not as a replacement for high-speed disk, but as a logical complement that makes sense in the real world of tight IT budgets and ever-changing storage needs. It is ideal for IT departments that need to provide high data throughput and fast recall without the expense of disk. Two mainframe versions are

available, one with a native FICON interface and one with a native ESCON interface. The fast access time of the T9840C is an ideal counterpart to the Sun StorageTek™ Virtual Storage Manager (VSM) system for fast recall of active data. A companion T9840C Fibre Channel system provides 2-gigabit connectivity to UNIX® and Windows NT environments.
