Individual compression achieved is a function of many variables,
including the data characteristics. For example, scientific data usually
compresses less than general business data. As a practical guide,
mainframe (MVS/ESCON) compression rates are typically 4:1, while client
server operating systems (UNIX/NT on SCSI or Fibre) usually achieve in
the 2:1 to 2.5:1 range. In all instances, slightly lower or
significantly higher numbers may be achieved. |

- Extreme changes in temperature and humidity should be avoided
whenever possible.
- Optimal operational conditions are nominally 68°-F (20°-C) and 50%
RH.
- When a cartridge is received, it should be allowed to acclimatize
within the operating environment for a period of at least 24 hours.
- Whenever possible, it is recommended that the 9840 cartridge be
stored in room environment conditions of 68°-+9°-F (20°-+5°-C),
50%+20% RH.
- As with all high-capacity, high-performance media, it is
recommended that the data on a dropped or damaged cartridge be copied
to another cartridge and the dropped cartridge be retired.
