Unitrends, Inc. announced support for Google Cloud Storage Nearline to provide its customers with low cost long-term cloud archival.

This offering is possible through the company’s Unitrends CloudHook capability, which facilitates archiving from Unitrends’ Recovery-Series physical and Unitrends Enterprise Backup virtual appliances to third-party clouds, such as Google Cloud Storage, Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) and Rackspace Cloud Files.

CloudHook has supported Google cloud Storage’s Standard and Durable Reduced Availability (DRA) offerings for several years and passed compatibility testing for the beta version of Google Cloud Storage Nearline.

Our customers are constantly looking for new and innovative ways tocost-effectively manage their rapidly growing storage with less operational expense, and our support of Google Cloud Storage Nearline enables them to take advantage of Google’s groundbreaking new storage offering,” said Mark Campbell, chief marketing and technology officer, Unitrends. “We are unique in offering customers not only our own Unitrends cloud for DR and BC, but also access to other third-party storage clouds. Giving customers this freedom is just one more way we’re delivering on our commitment to provide solutions that increase the confidence and productivity of IT professionals.

Archiving data for long-term retention has traditionally been a complex, costly and time-consuming process as companies typically backup data to rotational media, such as tape, and then work with a third-party vendor to get archived data offsite. Offerings such as Google Cloud Storage are taking the pain out of this process by letting customers archive directly to the cloud. CloudHook enables Unitrends customers to integrate their Recovery-Series physical appliances and Unitrends Enterprise Backup virtual appliances with their preferred cloud storage offering to manage long-term retention of backup data.

When all is said and done I believe we can’t exclude tape from the data center,

Hardware too on occasion fails. We all know this as do the manufacturers of all the disk and tape hardware in the market, after all they offer warranty contracts.

Moving part or just electronic go bad on occasion.

Today I believe it’s fair to say that good mechanical hardware (such as LTO or enterprise tape drives) are very well made and are reliable.

Can we fix a defective drive – almost certainly 99% of the time the answer is in the afermative. As for disk drives, I can’t recall the last time I hear of anyone repairing the mechanical parts of a drive.

As for the data – tape drives write to tape media and it is rear to have data written by just one tape drive in a data center. For the most part your data can be read.

With the amount of data being stored continuing to grow exponentially, tape offers some inherent advantages over disk-based technologies for long-term data storage, including:

  • High capacity:
  • Fast performance:
  • Lower cost per GB:
  • Reduced energy costs:
  • Portability:
  • Greater reliability:
  • Better longevity:
  • Scalability:
  • Compatibility:

When you combine tape’s superior storage capacities, low cost/GB, and reduced energy costs, tape-based storage solutions provide huge CapEx and Opex cost advantages. Even as technology advances, tape continues to be the ideal solution for long-term data storage and archiving.

Continue using tape, it is reliable and I can state with confidence that most tape drives can and are repaired, I can’t say the same for disk drives.

Rather than spending more on expensive primary and backup storage to accommodate data growth, move data to protected archive or extended online storage.

Your data can then be accessed and protected on less expensive storage without disrupting your day to day workflow.

As data is moved to archive storage it is no longer part of the regular backup process, so there is much less data to back up and backups take much less time.

The backup window that was out of control is once again manageable. Along with smaller backups comes lower investment.

Blending flash-based solid state disk and hard disk drives to provide high performance at an affordable price seems to be a trend in the marketplace today.  It seems as if every vendor offers a solution that meets this criteria. Bear in mind these systems are not the typical SAN storage arrays with a couple of SSD drives within the chassis. The controllers (often supporting multiple connectivity options) for Hybrid Storage Solutions along with the system itself have been optimized to address the question of how to best leverage flash by using flash as a large caching area, automatically moving the most active data into memory-based storage.

We at Sunstar Company work with a number of vendors that have Hybrid Storage offerings.

Nexsan’s (an Imation Company) hybrid offerings include:

Nexsan NST6000 Enterprise Class Unified Hybrid Storage

Nexsan NST6000MC Unified Hybrid Metro Storage Cluster

Nexsan NST4000 Unified Hybrid Storage for the Mid-Market

Nexsan NST2000 Unified Hybrid Storage for Entry-Level

Imation’s Nexsan® NST combines high performance, high capacity and innovative FASTier® caching technology to provide scalable performance for mixed application workloads and virtualized environments.

  • Fulfills changing application and storage needs with unified NAS and SAN access capabilities in a single hybrid solution
  • Lets you right-size your initial acquisition by scaling storage, performance, or both as your company grows
  • Compresses data to reduce its storage system footprint and improve write efficiency to cache and storage

The Nexsan E48™/E48V™/E48VT™  and the Nexsan E60™/E60V™/E60VT™ are:

4U , rack-mountable RAID storage systems which can hold up to 48 or 60 SATA, SAS, or SSD data disks.

The base models of the Nexsan E60™ and Nexsan E48™ use:

3Gb/s SAS for internal communication between the RAID Controllers and hard disks.

The V and VT variants use 6Gb/s SAS for internal communication.

The VT variants also have a turbo card installed in each RAID Controller which optimizes sequential writes in parity-based RAIDs.

There is no upgrade path between the base models and either the V or VT variants.

Aside from the difference in internal communication speed and the presence of the turbo card in the VT units,

there is no operational difference between the base models and either the V or VT variants.

Nexsan E48VT and Nexsan E60VT are available for purchase from Sunstar Company.

Kaminario_blue logo

Are you aware that Kaminario is the Only All-Flash Array that…

  • Scales Right: Does BOTH Scale-Up and Scale-Out
  • Globally adapts to applications block-size
  • Supports global inline selective deduplication
  • Allows to mix & match Controllers and SSDs
  • Has highest capacity utilization (87.5% with K-RAID™) and highest density (up to 64 TB/U)

This is super important because as your needs grow; be it capacity or performance, Kaminario’s K2 can to:

The ability to accommodate various capacity sizes of SSDs and the flexibility of scalability allows a tailored-fit configuration to meet the requirements of the individual customer.

SCALE-UP

Scaling up means adding more capacity by adding Expansion Shelves without adding K-Blocks.

The expansion increases the capacity density and reduces the cost per GB
The Expansion Shelf is connected redundantly using SAS connectivity
The expansion is done online with no downtime or decrease in performance
The new configuration has the same performance as before
Existing volumes are automatically redistributed between all the SSDs in the array
No need to change any host connections or definitions

SCALE-OUT
Scaling out means to increase the number of K-Blocks, thus adding more capacity and compute power.

The expansion linearly increases the capacity, IOPS and throughput. The latency is kept consistently low and is indifferent to the expansion.
Two InfiniBand switches are required to support the interconnect between all the K-Nodes in the array. Scaling beyond two K-Blocks will not require any additional networking hardware.
The expansion is performed online with no downtime or decrease in performance
Existing volumes are automatically redistributed between all the SSDs in the array and can be accessed from every K-Node in the array.
New hosts can be connected to the new K-Block, and the new and existing hosts can access all new and existing volumes.

SCALE-OUT AND SCALE-UP

There is no particular order in which the K2 scales. The K2 can first scale up, then scale out and vice versa. This flexibility removes any compromises of using a storage array that is not tailored to the customer’s needs and datacenter requirement

Similar to the scale-up of a single K-Block, also in this case:
The expansion increases the capacity density and reduces the $/GB factor
The Expansion Shelves are connected redundantly using SAS connectivity
The expansion is performed online with no downtime or decrease in performance
Existing volumes are automatically redistributed between all the SSDs in the array
No need to change any host connections or definitions

Ideally Suited for:

OLTP (On-line Transaction Processing) is characterized by a large number of short on-line transactions

The main emphasis for OLTP systems is put on very fast query processing, maintaining data integrity in multi-access environments and an effectiveness measured by number of transactions per second. In OLTP database there is detailed and current data, and schema used to store transactional databases is the entity model.

OLAP (On-line Analytical Processing) is characterized by relatively low volume of transactions. Queries are often very complex and involve aggregations.

For OLAP systems a response time is an effectiveness measure. OLAP applications are widely used by Data Mining techniques. In OLAP database there is aggregated, historical data, stored in multi-dimensional schemas

Available from Sunstar Company. Please call to learn why you should consider Kaminario’s K2 for your enviornment.

The following table summarizes the major differences between OLTP and OLAP system design.

OLTP System
Online Transaction Processing
(Operational System)

OLAP System
Online Analytical Processing
(Data Warehouse)

Source of data

Operational data; OLTPs are the original source of the data.

Consolidation data; OLAP data comes from the various OLTP Databases

Purpose of data

To control and run fundamental business tasks

To help with planning, problem solving, and decision support

What the data

Reveals a snapshot of ongoing business processes

Multi-dimensional views of various kinds of business activities

Inserts and Updates

Short and fast inserts and updates initiated by end users

Periodic long-running batch jobs refresh the data

Queries

Relatively standardized and simple queries Returning relatively few records

Often complex queries involving aggregations

Processing Speed

Typically very fast

Depends on the amount of data involved; batch data refreshes and complex queries may take many hours; query speed can be improved by creating indexes

Space Requirements

Can be relatively small if historical data is archived

Larger due to the existence of aggregation structures and history data; requires more indexes than OLTP

Database Design

Highly normalized with many tables

Typically de-normalized with fewer tables; use of star and/or snowflake schemas

Backup and Recovery

Backup religiously; operational data is critical to run the business, data loss is likely to entail significant monetary loss and legal liability

Instead of regular backups, some environments may consider simply reloading the OLTP data as a recovery method

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure on K2    Deploying Flash Storage for VDI

Keeping users productive and satisfied is critical to the success of any VDI deployment. Solving this problem can be easily achieved by implementing a solid flash solution – Kaminanrio’s K2.

Kaminario’s K2’s consistent low latency and predictable high IOPS/throughput deliver responsive virtual desktops and ensures both IT and users can get their work done.

K2’s consistent performance under load extends the scope of VDI from undemanding task workers, all the way up to performance-sensitive expert users where it was previously infeasible, keeping all of the VDI users productive and satisfied.

Benchmarks have demonstrated K2’s ability to support rapid deployment of VMware View virtual desktops with 1,000 desktops deployed in just 70 minutes. During even this strenuous test, the K2 array remained highly responsive with IOPS peaking at 70,000 while latency remained below 1.0 ms.

Simultaneous startup and shutdown of large groups of virtual desktops typically create storms that bring legacy storage to its knees, resulting in downtime and unhappy users. Benchmarks, run on a single K-Block K2 array holding 1,500 virtual desktops, measured only 8 minutes required to boot all desktops and only 3 minutes required to power them down, with array latency still remaining well below 1.0 ms.

Kaminario can solve your VDI problems. Do reach out to us and ask to speak with a a Flash expert and let us guide you this this process.

The Nexsan Assureon is a tamper-resistant system, purpose-built with multiple layers of safeguards to prevent, even with administrator-level access to the system and detailed understanding of its technology, any attempt at file deletion or modification. In the unlikely event that an information asset archived on Assureon ever becomes corrupted, the system, when using a redundant configuration, will automatically and transparently replace the asset from one of the redundant copies.

Key features

• Automatically checks integrity of archived files
• Immutability—archived files cannot be changed
• Self healing—ensures that all files are healthy and retrievable
• Fast access to archived files and metadata
• Non-erasable, non-rewritable functionality

  1. Storage Optimization – offload primary storage to free up space for active data and reduce the size, time and costs of monthly full backups
  2. Regulatory & Corporate Compliance – comply with governmental regulatory requirements including HIPPA, SOX and SEC-17. Enforce company data retention, privacy and protection policies
  3. Long-Term Archive – store managed data for days or decades with unsurpassed integrity and protection in an easy to administer system that resides on-premise, in the cloud, or both.

Integrity

  • Fingerprints – Each time a file is saved, a unique fingerprint is generated using both an MD5 and SHA1 hash of its contents and metadata, so history and contents cannot be altered after the fact (WORM storage)
  • Serial Numbers – Each file is assigned a serial number which is used to ensure no files are missing or inappropriately added
  • Secure Time – Tampering with the system time clock is prevented by using a global, redundant, secure time source (Stratum Level I hardware time sources
  • Two Copies – Each file and its fingerprint are stored twice in the Assureon.
  • Data Verification – Files are continually verified against their fingerprints, repaired using their copies and safeguarded by RAID disk arrays for days or decades

Scalability and High Availability

  • Remote Replication – Two active Assureon systems can continuously replicate to each other to protect against a site failure
  • Failover/failback – Native active/active replication protects against site disasters with automatic read failover and manual write failover
  • Performance & Capacity – Scale capacity up to multiple petabytes and add performance by using multiple Assureon archive storage systems together
  • InfiniBand – Optional High Speed Assureon with InfiniBand connectivity provides blazingfast retrieval of data from the Assureon archive

Privacy

  • Separation of Data – Assureon provides complete separation of data between departments or projects using logical and physical separation as well as separation through the use of multiple AES-256 encryption keys
  • Encryption – Files can be AES-256 encrypted. Keys for a replicated Assureon are stored safely at 4 sites by the integrated key management system. A nominal annual key management subscription is required
  • Authentication – Users are authenticated with Active Directory or digital certificates
  • Audit Trails – Audit trails report on file access and denied access attempts

Regulatory and Corporate Compliance

  • Government Regulations – Meet regulatory mandates (e.g., Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP), SOX, SEC-17, HIPAA, GLBA and PCI DSS)
  • Data Retention – Easily create retention rules and associate them with unstructured data directories or file types
  • Legal Hold – A legal hold can be easily placed on any set of files, overriding their original retention periods until the hold is removed
  • One System – Data sets can be retained for a period of time that can be extended but not shortened. Other data sets can be assigned a flexible retention period that can be lengthened or shortened to accommodate both needs in the organization
  • Data Deletion – Industry-leading single-pointdeletion deletes all copies by destroying the encryption key for the file and deleting all copies of the file. Optional DoD wipe of the drive is also available on a per-object granularity

Easy to Manage

  • Automatic Archive – Assureon Windows Client moves files from Windows Servers to the Assureon and can leave the original file in place or optionally leave a shortcut behind
  • NAS (NFS/CIFS) – Assureon Edge presents a CIFS/NFS NAS interface to users and applications and stores all files on Assureon. Both replicated and Clustered NAS configurations are available
  • Fast, Easy Deployment – The Assureon Client can be installed on Windows Server 2003 or 2008 with no reboot required. Once the archiving policies are established, files and folders are archived, completely transparent to applications and users
  • Global Management – Single pane-of-glass management of all local and remote Assureon
  • Utmost Data Protection – Protecting data with Assureon has many advantages over traditional backups including WORM, single file deletion, greater reliability and availability, and near instantaneous restores to dramatically reduced RTO
  • Authentication – Assureon uses Microsoft Active Directory for authentication in the enterprise and can preserve folderlevel NTFS permissions; it can also use certificates for authentication in Linux or Unix environments, standalone Windows servers or when it is used for a multi-tenancy cloudbased online archive
  • Reports – Standard reports keep track of storage usage for bill back of cloud services customers or within an individual customer bill back for projects or departments
  • Four levels of monitoring – Automated monitoring via system state thresholds, node events, Assureon Client and self-healing file integrity and availability audits
  • Lights-out Management – Self-managing Assureon issues alerts when something needs attention

Easy to Use

  • Non-disruptive– Users and applications do not need to change to work with Assureon. An application running on a Windows 2003 or 2008 server can have its data securely archived, freeing up primary storage while the application is in production
  • Prior Versions – Prior versions of files are easily retrieved by administrators
  • Assureon Explorer – A web-based GUI makes it easy to search the entire archive with role-based restrictions for instant access. Metadata search is included with all Assureon systems. Optional file content indexing and searching is available as an Assureon Content Index Search node for typical files such as office, textual PDF files, text files, html files, xml files, etc.

Efficient

  • Free Primary Storage – Files moved to Assureon free up primary storage
  • Reduce Backups – Archived folders can be removed from the backup stream, significantly reducing the size of full backups. The result is a very fast return on investment based on savings of labor, hardware, media and time
  • Fast Restores – Hyper speed restores replace small shortcuts rather than the actual file contents to meet even the toughest Recovery Time Objectives (RTO)
  • Power Savings – AutoMAID energy saving technology reduces power consumption by up to 60% while maintaining fast response
  • Less Space Needed – Single-instance storage technology eliminates duplicate files, saving 20-60% on typical mid-sized organization’s Assureon capacity requirements

Cloud-Ready

  • Multi-tenancy – Multi-tenancy features enable service providers to offer highly secure Archive-as-a-Service with logical, physical and encryption data separation
  • Online Archive – An on-premise Assureon can replicate to a cloud-based Assureon powered archive service. Assureon supports one-to-one and manyto- one replication

With the growth of data and the larger question looming, can I erase some of the older data?

We all have been faced with this problem. Personally it can be an email(s) or perhaps a duplicate photograph, is it really a duplicate?

On occasion it simply is easier to purchase more capacity when we just don’t know what the next step will be. Recently we worked with a client that just needed more capacity, sure we could dig down and figure if there was a better option. However as I said, on occasion we just must purchase more storage.

Should you need either more SAN, NAS or both contact us at Sunstar Company.

Worldwide purpose-built backup appliance (PBBA) factory revenue grew 3.0% Y/Y totaling $1.0 billion in 4Q14, according to the International Data Corporation’s Worldwide Quarterly Purpose-Built Backup Appliance Tracker.

For the full year, factory revenue was up 4.0%, to $3.26 billion in 2014.

Total PBBA open systems factory revenue increased 3.4% Y/Y in 4Q14 with revenues totaling $902.2 million while the mainframe market experienced a decline of 0.8% for the same period.

Total worldwide PBBA capacity shipped, for 4Q14, reached 924PB, an increase of 40.3% Y/Y, while annual capacity was up 42.8% to 2.68EB.

An advancement of software features, allowing for greater flexibility, data tiering, file sharing, and data analytics, as well as an increase in integrated systems and a wider geographical dispersion have resulted in PBBA systems being recognized by end users as an integral part of their data protection strategy. Growth in the worldwide PBBA market remained strong in the fourth quarter, hitting the billion dollar mark for the first time in a given quarter,” said Liz Conner, research manager, storage systems. “An advancement of software features, allowing for greater flexibility, data tiering, file sharing, and data analytics, as well as an increase in integrated systems and a wider geographical dispersion have resulted in PBBA systems being recognized by end users as an integral part of their data protection strategy.”

IDC defines a purpose-built backup appliance (PBBA) as a standalone disk-based solution that utilizes software, disk arrays, server engine(s), or nodes that are used for a target for backup data and specifically data comi ng from a backup application (e.g., NetWorker, NetBackup, TSM, and Backup Exec) or can be tightly integrated with the backup software to catalog, index, schedule, and perform data movement. The PBBA products are deployed in standalone configurations or as gateways. PBBA solutions deployed in a gateway configuration connect to and store backup data on general-purpose storage. Here, the gateway device is serving as the component that is purpose built solely for backup and not for supporting any other workload or application. Regardless of packaging (as an appliance or gateway), PBBAs can have multiple interfaces or protocols. Also, PBBAs often can provide and receive replication to or from remote sites and a secondary PBBA for the purpose of DR.

NST

Hybrid Storage  is defined as a combination of solid-state disk (SSD) and hard disk drives (HDD) in a single storage system.

Use SSD to increase the cache memory pool so that I/Os are accelerated before they go through the controller to the back-end disk drives. The larger the cache memory pool, the greater the likelihood of getting a cache hit without having to access the back-end disks—which results in greater application performance.

According to the Active Archive Alliance, nearly 250 million Linear Tape Open (LTO) tape cartridges have been shipped since the format’s inception. (100,000 PB of data on LTO.)

The realities of a Big Data world and the advances in tape technology, density, reliability and usability have brought the realization to many that we should not be too hasty to forgo tape.

Tape is returning to some organizations that dumped it a while back.

Look Beyond Backup

Most people think of tape as a medium for backup. While it can serve that function well, it has a far broader function these days. With so much data around, the pressure on backup windows needs to be eased by the establishment of an archive.

“Stop thinking about tape just as a backup solution, and instead think differently about storage of unstructured file content,” said Eric Bassier, Senior Director, Product Management, Quantum. “With new tape innovations like Linear Tape File System (LTFS), storing files on tape is easier than ever, and can be as easy as drag and drop.”

Add a Tape Archive Tier

Just as companies found it relatively easy to add a Tier 0 for flash, it is also fairly straightforward to add a lower tape tier as an archive for the bulk of data.

By adding a tape archive, organizations can maintain their existing storage architecture as is and ease its burden by offloading data that is no longer heavily accessed onto a tape archive. By doing so, they can avoid the heavier price tags typically associated with adding yet another high end disk array.

Evaluate Tape Vendors Against Ease of Use

Some tape systems are relatively easy to implement while others can be a little complex – or at least foreign to those more used to flash and disk. So a smart approach is to include ease of use as a priority criterion when deciding which tape product to implement. Vendors such as Crossroads are coming out with tape technology that is said to be as simple as disk to install and operate, and makes it fast to retrieve from the archive.

Use Tape for Large Files

Current video and high-res images should be stored on disk as they are being accessed and worked on daily. But as soon as they are completed, they need to be moved off high-end production systems.

Tape for Really Big Data

There is big data and then there is Big Data.

presently you can store more than 300 Blu-ray quality movies on one LTO-6 2.5 TB cartridge, in the future, an LTO-10 cartridge will hold over 14,400 Blu-ray movies.

Use Tape to Lower Storage Costs

There is no question that a LTFS-based ‘Tape as NAS  will cost significantly less than a disk only solution over a 10-year period.

Let me get straight to the point.

The sheer volume and variety of ways in which data can be breached is daunting, including: silent data corruption due to hardware failure and software failure, malicious attacks from cybercriminals or human error such as accidental file deletion or overwriting by employees, etc. Yet for all too many data center managers, their response to these threats seems to be a
strategy based on hope.

Unless we can answer the following four critical questions, the odds are that the data protection strategy is tantamount to just hoping that nothing goes wrong:

  1. Do you know if all your files are in the “backup” or archive?
  2. Is there a copy of all your flies at your remote site?
  3. What is the health (integrity) of your files at each site?
  4. If they are different which one is correct?

The Assureon will allow your Data Center Manager to state with confidence that “your archived data is safe and has integrity”.

The Nexsan Assureon™ is an archive system that is ideal for primary storage optimization, regulatory and corporate compliance, and the secure, long-term retention of files.

Assureon offloads data from primary storage to free up space for active data and greatly reduces the size, cost and complexity of backups.

The Assureon is sold as a pair, active – active and given you the second copy of your data.

The Nexsan Assureon supports:

  • Information Capture
  • Document Image Capture
  • Data Capture
  • Indexing
  • Long Term Retention of Files
  • Data Encryption
  • Security and Protection
  • Date and Time Stamps

March 2015

Unitrends, a leader in enterprise-level cloud recovery, today announced that its Unitrends Certified Recovery Suite™ (UCRS) was named a silver winner in the “Backup and Disaster Recovery Software and Services” category in the Storage magazine/SearchStorage.com 2014 Products of the Year awards.

“We are honored that Unitrends Certified Recovery Suite was chosen for this prestigious award from SearchStorage.com and Storage Magazine,” said Kevin Weiss, president and CEO, Unitrends. “We strive to provide uniquely simple, cloud-empowered solutions that increase IT confidence, and given the advancements that we intend to deliver in 2015, we believe that this award is only the beginning.”

UCRS was chosen based on the following criteria: innovation, performance, ease of integration into existing environments, ease of use and manageability, functionality and value. Judged by the Storage magazine/SearchStorage.com editorial staff – in conjunction with a team of users, industry experts, analysts and consultants – these awards focus specifically on new and upgraded products shipped between October 2013 and October 2014.

Key features of UCRS include:

  • Application-aware hypervisor-level protection of VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix XenServer
  • Virtual and physical protection of more than 100 servers, storage, operating systems, and application versions
  • Certified application recovery for VMware and Hyper-V with automated failover, failback, testing, and RPO/RTO enforcement
  • Unified backup, dissimilar bare metal (P2P, P2V, V2P, V2V), archiving, instant recovery, and replication capabilities

Unless your systems are protected by some kind of mirroring or high availability system, you’re probably going to lose some data when a disaster strikes.

The question is, how much data can you afford to lose?

Data loss can be expensive! There are many case studies that speak of companies that have in essence gone out of business just because of data loss.

A recovery point objective (RPO) is a useful tool for disaster recovery planning, especially when it comes to planning and executing backups. A  RPO is a measurement of your tolerance for data loss and it can help you decide how often you need to be backing up, as well as what sort of infrastructure you need in place in order to support those backups.

Enter Unitrends

Unitrends backup appliances provide point-in-time data recovery and speedy restore of failed systems. But your data protection strategy should stipulate a third component: off-site storage for your protected data and systems.

Replicate your data to a second site – be it to another Unitrends Appliance or perhaps to the Cloud.

NST4000side

A fully unified, enterprise-class, unified hybrid storage solution that simultaneously supports block and file traffic eliminating the need for organizations to invest in separate SAN and NAS storage systems. The NST4000 and NST2000 from Nexsan support Fibre Channel in addition to iSCSI, 10GbE and NAS .

Hybrid Storage  =  a combination of solid-state disk (SSD) and hard disk drives (HDD) in a single storage system.

Use SSD to increase the cache memory pool so that I/Os are accelerated before they go through the controller to the back-end disk drives.

The larger the cache memory pool, the greater the likelihood of getting a cache hit without having to access the back-end disks—which results in greater application performance.

Sony’s DIR-1000 Series data recorder conforms to the ANSI (American National Standard Institute) X3.175-1990 ID-1 format.

Standardized in 1990, the ID-1 format is based broadly on technology developed for professional broadcast video a market in which Sony products are widely recognized the world over.

The ID-1 format utilizes azimuth recording techniques whereby adjacent helical tracks are recorded at different azimuth angles to minimize the effects of misstracking for greater reliability on interchange.

Data recorded on each track on tape is processed by two Reed-Solomon product code arrays. The data is interleaved within the track to minimize the effects of larger dropouts. After correction, a bit error rate of better than 1 x 10-10 (1 x 10-13 with retry) is achieved.

The following models are available from Sunstar Company.

California is leading the way in defining how local governmental agencies should maintain official records in an electronic format in order to ensure they are reliable and trustworthy.  The state adopted regulations specifying that official electronic records must be maintained in a trusted system, as defined by AIIM/ANSI standards, specifically meaning AIIM’s Recommended Practices

The regulations, which went into effect this week, give clarification to the legal requirement that has been the law in California since 2000.  Local agencies are not required by either the regulations or the law to maintain their official records electronically, but if they chose to do so they must be sure the system in which the information is stored is considered trusted under ARP1 (2009).

At its core, ARP1 (2009) requires a trusted ECM system to have the following components:

  • A combination of hardware, media and software storage to prevent unauthorized alterations
  • Verifiable through independent audit processes
  • Write at least 1 of the 2 required copies to a safe and separate location
  • Policies and procedures for proper records handling.

Both the AIIM and ISO (ISO 15801 adopts similar concepts) recommendations recognize that there are too many variations for how each organization constructs its system to select just one methodology.  Therefore, those bodies recognize that the ultimate goal is to prevent unauthorized alterations to the records and use that concept as the central theme to constructing a trustworthy system.  Having redundancy and transparency are two additional components, as is the need to clearly state how the records will be handled through the adoption of policies and procedures, so that the staff members are consistently trained and understand the roles and responsibilities.

Unfortunately a greater number of official records are never transformed into any type of physical document, so the regulations do apply to those records created by the government.  Public agencies should be mindful of this trend and comply with California Government Code section 12168.7 and California Code of Regulations, Title 2, Div. 7, chapter 15, sections 22620.1 through 22620.8.  Failure to store and manage official government records in a trusted system could leave the public agency without a solid answer to the question of how it knows the information on those official records is true, accurate and reliable.

12168.7.

(a) The California Legislature hereby recognizes the need to adopt uniform statewide standards for the purpose of storing and recording permanent and
non-permanent documents in electronic media.

(b) In order to ensure that uniform statewide standards remain current and relevant, the Secretary of State shall approve and adopt appropriate standards established by the American National Standards Institute or the Association for Information and Image Management.

(c) The standards specified in subdivision (b) shall include a requirement that a trusted system be utilized. For this purpose and for purposes of Sections 25105, 26205, 26205.1, 26205.5, 26907, 27001, 27322.2, 34090.5, and 60203, Section 102235 of the Health and Safety Code, and Section 10851 of the Welfare  and Institutions Code, “trusted system” means a combination of techniques, policies, and procedures for which there is no plausible scenario in which a document retrieved from or reproduced by the system could differ substantially from the document that is originally stored.**
(d) In order to develop statewide standards as expeditiously as possible, and until the time that statewide standards are adopted pursuant to subdivision  (b), state officials shall ensure that microfilming, electronic data imaging, and photographic reproduction are done in compliance with the minimum  standards or guidelines, or both, as recommended by the American National Standards Institute or the Association for Information and Image Management for recording of permanent records or non-permanent records.

** This can be achieved by implementing the Nexsan Assureon , a logical fit to address any organizational gaps that an organization may have with the AIIM Standards.

So you have a need for a SAN – or do you?

Clearly sometime a SAN is the right choice, block level storage requirements such as for a database.

Then there is often the need for for file based storage, general files that we work on – daily: word, excel etc.

In the last three years we have seen a push for a mixed storage offering; a unified storage solution.

But is this really what you want? Yes, rather easy to manage and everything in a single box.

We at Sunstar Company represent a number of vendors that have all of the above:

There is no “absolute right” solution for your company. Let us share with you the advantages and disadvantages of independent offerings rather than everything in “one box”.

When considering these options, you must look at performance, ease of use, configuration and certainly support / maintenance.

To learn more – call the sales team at Sunstar Company, (800) 663 – 5523

Many Thanks

Gavin

Image result for private cloud

Private cloud is a marketing term for an enterprise computing architecture that’s protected by a firewall.

Private cloud (also called internal cloud or corporate cloud) is a marketing term for a proprietary computing architecture that provides hosted services to a limited number of people behind a firewall.

Advances in virtualization and distributed computing have allowed corporate network and datacenter administrators to effectively become service providers that meet the needs of their “customers” within the corporation.

Marketing media that uses the words “private cloud” is designed to appeal to an organization that needs or wants more control over their data than they can get by using a third-party hosted service such as Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) or Simple Storage Service (S3).

Promotion of the private cloud model is designed to appeal to an organization that wants more control over their data than they can get by using a third-party hosted service such as Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) or Simple Storage Service (S3).

Let Sunstar Company assist you to build your private cloud.

Data storage compliance and corporate governance regulations are having a tremendous impact on the storage organization, as well as the management practices employed to retain, search, certify and destroy data.

It’s not just the major regulations, like the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) or the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which influence storage — there are well over 10,000 regulations that affect data storage,…

Tested Backup and Archive Solutions are imperative in the world we live in.

NEXSAN NST2000 UNIFIED STORAGE WITH FIBRE OPTION

A truly efficient storage solution for the SMB market. As you will see below the NST2000 comes in a number of flavors with the ability to grow with ease.

Select Fibre or iSCSI Connectivity (A or B)

  1. NST2000 unified (NAS, SAN) storage systems all contain dual controllers, four quad-core processors, 96GB RAM, and four Fibre Channel ports for host connectivity per system.  Includes core operating system, Data Protection Package and E-Centre management platform software licenses. Supports up to one external storage expansion unit with similar performance characteristics.
  2. NST2000 unified (NAS, SAN) storage systems all contain dual controllers, four quad-core processors, 96GB RAM, and optional four 10GgE or four/eight 1GbE ports for host connectivity. Includes core operating system, Data Protection Package and E-Centre management platform software licenses. Supports up to one external storage expansion unit with similar performance characteristics

Now select Capacity Required – two options available:

  1. Performance Optimized
  2. Capacity Optimized

All systems come standard with:

  • FASTier® – Intelligent, self-tuning hybrid caching capability that uses a scalable pool of cache memory comprised of flash technologies to create a more efficient hybrid storage solution. Flash SSD technology is used to accelerate read and write IOPS and throughput. FASTier caching works transparently so there is no administration burden to turbo-charge I/O performance and handle the constant growth of mixed applications in your environment. FASTier caching is especially useful for random I/O workloads such as databases or for VMware, Xen or Hyper-V environments.
  • Inline Compression – As data is written, NST compresses data prior to it being written to the RAID volume. This reduces the amount of data written to SSD cache or HDD storage media, and, in-turn shrinks the total storage capacity requirements, datacenter footprint and improves storage system performance. NST Inline Compression can be set on a per volume basis and is transparent operation.

Nexsan’s NST’s FASTier hybrid caching accelerates performance while the unified protocol enables mixed applications. The NST2000 delivers a full enterprise-class feature set for your mid-size data center storage.

The Nexsan NST2000 by Imation expands the availability of fault-tolerant FASTier™ DRAM caching and Fibre Channel SAN connectivity, and puts them in reach of mid-range businesses

Use SSD to increase the cache memory pool so that I/Os are accelerated before they go through the controller to the back-end disk drives. The larger the cache memory pool, the greater the likelihood of getting a cache hit without having to access the back-end disks—which results in greater application performance.

Hybrid Storage  is defined as a combination of solid-state disk (SSD) and hard disk drives (HDD) in a single storage system.

A fully unified, enterprise-class, unified hybrid storage solution that simultaneously supports block and file traffic eliminating the need for organizations to invest in separate SAN and NAS storage systems.

NST2000 scales capacity and performance.

  • Capacity is scaled by adding an additional NST storage modules. NST storage modules come in different form factors to address different organizational needs.
  • FASTier – Caching is NST’s intelligent, self-tuning hybrid caching capability that uses a scalable pool of cache memory comprised of  flash technologies to create a more efficient hybrid storage solution. FASTier provides increased performance for mixed application workload environments over traditional caching techniques.

The Nexsan NST2000 provides CIFS, NFS and FTP file sharing protocols for enterprise NAS file sharing as well as the FC and iSCSI SAN block storage protocol for server volume sharing.

Kaminario

Kaminarios’s K2 is an All-Flash Array that can “scale-right” – scale-up with expansion shelves to increase capacity or scale-out with added K-Blocks to increase performance, or both.

Scaling up and out is impressive on its own, but what about performance.

  • K2 delivers consistent performance even in the face of challenging concurrent I/O demands from databases and virtualized servers or desktops. K2’s consistent performance capabilities under even extreme mixed workloads and SPEAR’s advanced technologies enable K2 to perform exceptionally well as the primary storage tier for a wide range of applications, servers, databases, and user workloads.

Then there is capacity.

  • K2 has a complete set of native capacity saving features that can save up to 95% of the physical storage used. Data reduction via selective deduplication and global compression, plus thin-provisioning, can dramatically cut the space needed for virtual servers, databases, and virtual desktops. Native writeable snapshots enable backing up and replicating databases, cloning data sets, and archiving virtual machines with no impact on performance and capacity savings of 90%.

We all know that today security is all to important.

  • K2 features always-on, data-at-rest encryption capabilities engineered with 256-bit AES keys technology. Designed to deliver absolute security and prevent theft, K2’s encryption enables compliance with industry and government regulations without compromising storage efficiency. K2 protects data by requiring administrative authorization for access and ensures no data is available on drives after deletion through a cryptographic SSD erase feature.

These are the facts:

  • Kaminario K2 All-Flash Array delivers consistently high performance combined with cost effectiveness and capacity efficiency no matter what the platform or workload.
  • K2 can help make all of your IT deployments perform better and at a significantly lower effective cost than other storage architectures.
  • With K2 all of your data center systems can consistently perform better, cost less, and scale easily and reliably.

Imation (NYSE:IMN), a global data storage and information security company, announced it has unveiled its new Secure Data Movement Architecture (SDMA™) to give organizations a holistic approach to actively manage their high-value data files and protect them from tampering, destruction, loss or leakage through their entire lifecycle. SDMA empowers end users to manage their own policy for protecting their high-value data in addition to enabling organizational control and management policies.

High-value data is comprised of an organization’s critical data files that must be safeguarded from tampering, loss or corruption. According to IDC, 25.2 of the 37.4 exabytes of storage that was shipped worldwide in 2013, or 67 percent, was for the purposes of storing unstructured data files. Data files are being created by users, devices and sensors and are being copied and proliferated across multiple device types, including personal devices such as tablets and smart phones. But there are not any holistic approaches to protecting all of it. Traditionally, applications have provided sufficient protection for the structured data stored within an organization’s internal IT environment; however with the tremendous growth of unstructured data that is often accessed by client applications, this data has become vulnerable as it may unwittingly escape organizational control or be accessed, tampered with or stolen by unknown threats.

SDMA actively safeguards high-value data from hand to cloud and creation to destruction. It protects high-value data from loss, leakage, destruction or resurrection, and manages it through policy-based control and security. It also addresses the need to safeguard data files throughout the data lifecycle, including archive, remote workers, file sharing and collaboration, storage management and cloud and mobile device endpoints. SDMA protects high-value data throughout the broader information ecosystem by drawing upon core capabilities found within Imation’s Nexsan Assureon™ Secure Archive, IronKey Secure Storage and IronKey Workspace with Windows To Go solutions that are in use today. Assureon provides a comprehensive secure archive solution that protects and preserves high-value data. IronKey mobile storage solutions enable users to securely access their workspaces and files remotely while adhering to corporate IT standards, and IronKey Workspace with Windows To Go is a PC on a Stick™ that equips employees and contractors with a portable Windows 8.1 corporate image.

“Security and storage can no longer be siloed. Imation is introducing comprehensive and innovative protection for high-value data files,” said Ian Williams, president of tiered storage and security solutions at Imation. “Organizations can no longer throw additional point solutions and hardware at the problem – we must take a holistic approach to data loss and leakage issues. The Secure Data Movement Architecture solves these problems in a comprehensive way and provides a framework to protect important data files. No matter where a user is, how much data they create or what device or solution they use to create and house their data – SDMA is designed to safeguard their most important information assets with the utmost confidence.”

A recent Imation survey of end users revealed 70 percent did not classify high-value data, highlighting the organizational disconnect of protecting critical files. Organizations attempt to define or dictate policies or deploy point solutions in an attempt to regain control over their high-value data; this has only succeeded in frustrating and hampering the end user’s ability to do more with their data. End users want their data safeguarded, but they also want to be productive when they are away from the office or working with external contractors and consultants. When faced with cumbersome policies or solutions, end users either bypass them or limit their effort to the boundaries placed on them.

In addition, information technology and security professionals are increasingly challenged by the pace in which data files move both internally and externally. It’s hard for them to manage data across all of the physical and other storage devices that data lives on – personal computers, servers, mobile devices and/or the cloud – and to keep that data from being lost or stolen. These challenges only get more difficult as data growth continues to explode and more data files are seen as important or mission-critical business assets.

“SDMA really goes back to Imation’s roots of helping our customers store, protect and connect their information,” said Claude Farmer, vice president of engineering at Imation. “This is a holistic approach that will include components that empower organizations to protect and preserve files anywhere and anytime.”

“Imation’s Secure Data Movement Architecture is an emerging real-world solution to today’s unstructured data management challenge. Data growth continues at exponential rates, and this data is an attractive target for cybercriminals looking to score big. Despite their best efforts organizations remain vulnerable to many potential problems relating to storing and securing their most important data, which is one of the reasons information security is the most important IT priority for 2015¹,” said Terri McClure, senior analyst, ESG. “Imation is uniquely positioned to lead the way forward for the industry with its pedigree in storage and security, its Nexsan family of data storage solutions and its IronKey mobile security solutions.”

With over fifty years of experience in protecting data for organizations around the world, Imation has a unique perspective to the risk organizations face in managing their data files. This legacy, along with a comprehensive secure product portfolio and over fifty data security patents and patents pending, demonstrate Imation’s mission of safeguarding data across today’s broader storage.

Just four and a half years after shipping its first Adaptive Flash platform, Nimble Storage (NYSE: NMBL), the flash storage solutions company, today announced that more than 5,000 customers worldwide have adopted the Nimble Storage Adaptive Flash platform. Achieving this significant milestone underscores the company’s vision to deliver the industry’s most efficient flash storage platform.

Since shipping the first CS-Series array in 2010, Nimble has established a strong track record for delivering innovation. In the first half of 2014 the company introduced its high-end CS700 platform and All Flash Shelf as part of the Adaptive Flash platform, effectively addressing all-flash workloads as well as petabyte-scale deployments within a single platform. In the second half of the year the company refreshed its entire platform portfolio to increase price-performance by more than 50 percent. The most significant advance in product innovation came with the early release of Fibre Channel functionality across the CS-Series arrays enabling Nimble to address enterprise-wide storage requirements and quadruple the addressable market the company is able to serve.

The Nimble Adaptive Flash platform continues to gain significant traction with enterprise customers and cloud service providers. Enterprise customers include: Target Commercial Interiors, Starwood Waikiki, National Information Solutions Cooperative, CareOregon, LANDESK, Gorkana Group, National Cable Communications, Deltek, Grant Street Group, Kern Health Systems, Energy Information Administration, HeliMods, and Queensland Sugar Limited. Cloud service provider customers include: SingleHop, Xtium, Avanade, and BlueTie.

“Surpassing the 5,000th customer milestone so quickly represents the collective commitment to excellence of our dedicated and passionate employees. I want to thank our entire organization, as well as our customers and partners,” said Suresh Vasudevan, CEO, Nimble Storage. “The Nimble Adaptive Flash platform underscores the comprehensive nature of our approach to leveraging the three major disruptive changes in the storage market: flash, cloud, and converged infrastructure. We are uniquely positioned to leverage these architectural changes and emerge as the market leader. Our value proposition to enterprises and cloud service providers as a platform that can consolidate enterprise-wide workloads cost-effectively, with vastly better performance, superior data protection and radically lower complexity will enable us to continue to accelerate our high win rates against the leading incumbent platforms.”

Disk is typically easier to access than tape, but doing so does requires some effort.

With disk, the data is usually not encrypted because it does not change hands that often (though disk-based encryption is quickly becoming standard). If the backup is unencrypted, it is possible to retrieve a single identified item or group of items without restoring the entire backup, making it far superior to tape for finding data.

This is yet another reason why information management professionals and counsel must be prepared for the possibility of disk backups coming under the scope of reasonably accessible sources for discovery.

Tape restoration costs can slightly surpass those of disk. Tape requires more resources because it creates contention in the data center’s bandwidth as backups are continuing to write simultaneous to the restoration process.

Further, if an organization no longer has the hardware or resources to restore legacy data, it may need to engage an outside provider.

While the contention issue goes away with disk use, such restoration still requires a location for the restored data to be written to, such as a disk array or other hardware.

Restoring from disk is typically faster than restoring from tape as well.

The NST2000 is only entry-level when it comes to its price point – it expands upon Imation’s Nexsan NST™ family of hybrid storage solutions, and will be spotlighted at Imation’s booth (M24) through the end of the show. It will be available in the second quarter.

The NST2000 delivers a powerful yet simple to deploy and manage hybrid storage solution using the latest high-performance technologies, and provides the scalability and flexibility to meet the needs of organizations that continue to rapidly add new applications to their environments. With an intelligent hybrid caching layer, NST2000 is optimized for mixed application workloads, media and entertainment workflows and data protection strategies. NST2000 also is ideal for organizations looking to strategically move toward hybrid storage and take advantage of the new levels of performance, availability and reliability it can deliver.

As with all of the hybrid storage systems in the NST product family, NST2000 has a standard all-inclusive software licensing model which includes features such as:

  • Unified Fibre Channel Support – NST2000 expands the Nexsan NST family’s unified block and file sharing capabilities by adding Fibre Channel connectivity for those small and medium-sized organizations that prefer it for their applications. This gives organizations the ability to take advantage of the benefits of NST’s hybrid storage using a full range of unified storage protocols, including iSCSI, NFS, CIFS, FTP and now Fibre Channel.
  • Capacity Scalability –NST2000 capacities start at 13TB and can scale up to 168TB and 2TB FASTier™ cache, delivering much more flexibility to IT administrators.
  • Intelligent Hybrid Caching – The NST2000 combines Imation’s intelligent caching algorithms with solid-state disks (SSD’s) and the latest processor technology to provide blazing fast performance for business critical applications.
  • Enhanced Data Reduction – The NST2000 delivers faster and smarter inline compression. Compressible data can be processed 50 percent faster than with preceding NST arrays, and intelligence removes the penalty of trying to act upon noncompressible data.

“With the introduction of the NST2000, organizations have an entirely new set of options for storing, managing and protecting the high-value data they create in situations like digital asset management in media and entertainment workflows,” said Mike Stolz, vice president of marketing and technical support for Imation’s Nexsan solutions. “They can deploy hybrid storage, realize new levels of performance, scale their data centers to new levels of capacity and much more – all at a price point that was previously inaccessible to them given their limited budgets and resources. We’re excited to help these organizations operate more efficiently and generate more ROI from their storage investment – and to add the NST2000 to help address a full range of application requirements.”

Imation’s Nexsan NST™ is a set of flexible hybrid storage appliances that scale to meet mid-sized organization application and storage needs with unified NAS and SAN access capabilities in a single solution. Other product lines in Imation’s deep Nexsan portfolio of purpose-built storage solutions are:

  • Imation’s Nexsan E-Series™ is a family of high-density, high-performance and highly reliable storage solutions that can be directly attached or networked to workstations and servers.
  • Imation’s Nexsan Assureon™ is a set of secure storage solutions that reduce storage cost by offloading and deduplicating data from primary storage that is infrequently used or has aged by policy.

At some point in time a backup solution will be deployed in all organizations. Sure there is a wide choice of offerings and we are not just talking about disk or tape.  For the most part a number of vendors are required for a backup solution to be deployed.

More likely both software and hardware will be required. This works but what we at Sunstar have learned over the years that in time, more challenges arise. Operating Systems get updated or changed, hardware is replaced and then there is the added headache that support must be available from both the software and hardware vendor.

It is for these reasons that many of our clients have opted to an “all in one” solution.  Unitrends is one of our “go to vendors” when a client will best be suited by an all in solution.

It seems as if at some point in time we all need to purchase some SAN Storage (Block). In some cases we can make do with a NAS (File) but if you need to run a database of some significance a SAN will be required.

So what is a SAN?

A storage area network (SAN) is any high-performance network whose primary purpose is to enable storage devices to communicate with computer systems and with each other.

SAN’s connect one or many servers to storage, enabling the users to negotiate device ownership among themselves and, ideally, to share data.

By deploying multiple servers to a SAN an organization will create a central pool of data , accessible to the client.

A SAN must be highly available. A single SAN connecting all computers to all storage puts a lot of enterprise information accessibility eggs into one basket. The SAN had better be pretty indestructible or the enterprise could literally be out of business. A good SAN implementation will have built-in protection against just about any kind of failure imaginable.

So the fundamental feature of SANs is universal data storage connectivity. Universal connectivity enables a host of important benefits. Depending on the particular SAN hardware and software components chosen, additional benefits may accrue from advanced functions being built into today’s SAN devices.

When evaluating SAN implementation options, once the basic capacity, availability, and performance requirements can be met, look for advanced functionality available in the chosen architecture and consider how it might be used to further reduce cost or enhance the information services delivered to users.

Flash certainly has disruptive potential in the data center, but do you really need to pay for flash-only storage, when you could realize better price-performance and capacity with the Nimble Storage Adaptive Flash platform?

That’s a crucial strategic question facing enterprise storage buyers today, who must support more and more performance-intensive applications and workloads – all while containing costs and complexity.

To help answer that question, Nimble is issuing an Adaptive Flash Challenge: If your organization is actively evaluating all-flash storage systems, simply run a side-by-side comparison with the Adaptive Flash platform, and we’ll send you a new Apple Watch just for participating.

How can we be so confident? It’s a question of perception versus reality. At first glance, it looks like flash-only storage is well suited to performance-intensive environments, even though it’s more expensive than solutions that leverage both flash and disk. But in real-world enterprise IT organizations, customers report that Nimble Adaptive Flash arrays consistently match or outperform flash-only systems, while offering a level of flexibility that flash-only solutions simply cannot match.

That flexibility is important:

  • You gain the speed of all-flash storage (up to 500K IOPS, with sub-millisecond latency), but still have petabytes of scalable capacity.
  • All-flash and “hybrid” workloads are consolidated on a single platform, that provides non-disruptive and independent scaling of performance and capacity.
  • All your flash storage – up to 160TBs – is available to accelerate apps, rather than being wasted on snapshots, RAID overhead, or over-provisioning.
  • Nimble’s built-in InfoSight™ analytics engine optimizes your storage resources, telling you exactly how much flash is needed to best support all your applications.

Are you willing to take on this challenge? Call (800) 663-5523 and let us guide you through this process.

There is a difference between Backup and Archive Solutions

BACKUP

  • A backup refers to a copy of data that may be used to restore the original original in the event that the latter is lost or damaged beyond repair.
  • This is your “go to” in the case of data loss.

ARCHIVE

  • An archive refers to a single or a collection of historical records specifically selected for long term retention and future reference.
  • Typically this data is seldom reviewed.

Degaussing is a process that reverses the polarity of the magnetic particles. This process erases data and servo tracks, in the event the tapes being erased use servo track technology. Media products such as 3480, 3490e, DLT, SDLT can be degaussed and the media reused. However, 3590, LTO, 9840 and 9940 cartridges cannot be degaussed without destroying the servo track(s). For these media types Recertification requires data destruction using modern methods which do not destroy the servo tracks.

Sunstar Company can help with the movement of your data!

At some point in time a business will choose to take advantage of more efficient storage technologies. The result; move physical blocks of data from one tape or disk to another, often using virtualization techniques.

The data format and content itself will not usually be changed in the process and can normally be achieved with minimal or no impact to the layers above.

Database migration

It may be necessary to move from one database vendor to another, or to upgrade the version of database software being used. The latter case is less likely to require a physical data migration, but this can happen with major upgrades. In these cases a physical transformation process may be required since the underlying data format can change significantly. This may or may not affect behavior in the applications layer, depending largely on whether the data manipulation language or protocol has changed – but modern applications are written to be agnostic to the database technology so that a change from Sybase, MySQL, DB2 or SQL Server to Oracle should only require a testing cycle to be confident that both functional and non-functional performance has not been adversely affected.

Application migration

Changing application vendor – for instance a new CRM or ERP platform – will inevitably involve substantial transformation as almost every application or suite operates on its own specific data model. Further, to allow the application to be sold to the widest possible market, commercial off-the-shelf packages are generally configured for each customer using metadata. Application programming interfaces (APIs) are supplied to protect the integrity of the data they have to handle. Use of the API is normally a condition of the software warranty, although a waiver may be allowed if the vendor’s own or certified partner professional services and all tools are used.
