Unitrends, Inc. announced support for Google Cloud Storage Nearline to provide its customers with low cost long-term cloud archival.

This offering is possible through the company’s Unitrends CloudHook capability, which facilitates archiving from Unitrends’ Recovery-Series physical and Unitrends Enterprise Backup virtual appliances to third-party clouds, such as Google Cloud Storage, Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) and Rackspace Cloud Files.

CloudHook has supported Google cloud Storage’s Standard and Durable Reduced Availability (DRA) offerings for several years and passed compatibility testing for the beta version of Google Cloud Storage Nearline.

Our customers are constantly looking for new and innovative ways tocost-effectively manage their rapidly growing storage with less operational expense, and our support of Google Cloud Storage Nearline enables them to take advantage of Google’s groundbreaking new storage offering,” said Mark Campbell, chief marketing and technology officer, Unitrends. “We are unique in offering customers not only our own Unitrends cloud for DR and BC, but also access to other third-party storage clouds. Giving customers this freedom is just one more way we’re delivering on our commitment to provide solutions that increase the confidence and productivity of IT professionals.

Archiving data for long-term retention has traditionally been a complex, costly and time-consuming process as companies typically backup data to rotational media, such as tape, and then work with a third-party vendor to get archived data offsite. Offerings such as Google Cloud Storage are taking the pain out of this process by letting customers archive directly to the cloud. CloudHook enables Unitrends customers to integrate their Recovery-Series physical appliances and Unitrends Enterprise Backup virtual appliances with their preferred cloud storage offering to manage long-term retention of backup data.

When all is said and done I believe we can’t exclude tape from the data center,

Hardware too on occasion fails. We all know this as do the manufacturers of all the disk and tape hardware in the market, after all they offer warranty contracts.

Moving part or just electronic go bad on occasion.

Today I believe it’s fair to say that good mechanical hardware (such as LTO or enterprise tape drives) are very well made and are reliable.

Can we fix a defective drive – almost certainly 99% of the time the answer is in the afermative. As for disk drives, I can’t recall the last time I hear of anyone repairing the mechanical parts of a drive.

As for the data – tape drives write to tape media and it is rear to have data written by just one tape drive in a data center. For the most part your data can be read.

With the amount of data being stored continuing to grow exponentially, tape offers some inherent advantages over disk-based technologies for long-term data storage, including:

  • High capacity:
  • Fast performance:
  • Lower cost per GB:
  • Reduced energy costs:
  • Portability:
  • Greater reliability:
  • Better longevity:
  • Scalability:
  • Compatibility:

When you combine tape’s superior storage capacities, low cost/GB, and reduced energy costs, tape-based storage solutions provide huge CapEx and Opex cost advantages. Even as technology advances, tape continues to be the ideal solution for long-term data storage and archiving.

Continue using tape, it is reliable and I can state with confidence that most tape drives can and are repaired, I can’t say the same for disk drives.

Sunstar Company.

Rather than spending more on expensive primary and backup storage to accommodate data growth, move data to protected archive or extended online storage.

Your data can then be accessed and protected on less expensive storage without disrupting your day to day workflow.

As data is moved to archive storage it is no longer part of the regular backup process, so there is much less data to back up and backups take much less time.

The backup window that was out of control is once again manageable. Along with smaller backups comes lower investment.

Consider the Nexsan Assureon for your archive solution. Call (800) 663-5523 to learn more.

The Nexsan Assureon is a tamper-resistant system, purpose-built with multiple layers of safeguards to prevent, even with administrator-level access to the system and detailed understanding of its technology, any attempt at file deletion or modification. In the unlikely event that an information asset archived on Assureon ever becomes corrupted, the system, when using a redundant configuration, will automatically and transparently replace the asset from one of the redundant copies.

Key features

• Automatically checks integrity of archived files
• Immutability—archived files cannot be changed
• Self healing—ensures that all files are healthy and retrievable
• Fast access to archived files and metadata
• Non-erasable, non-rewritable functionality

  1. Storage Optimization – offload primary storage to free up space for active data and reduce the size, time and costs of monthly full backups
  2. Regulatory & Corporate Compliance – comply with governmental regulatory requirements including HIPPA, SOX and SEC-17. Enforce company data retention, privacy and protection policies
  3. Long-Term Archive – store managed data for days or decades with unsurpassed integrity and protection in an easy to administer system that resides on-premise, in the cloud, or both.

Integrity

  • Fingerprints – Each time a file is saved, a unique fingerprint is generated using both an MD5 and SHA1 hash of its contents and metadata, so history and contents cannot be altered after the fact (WORM storage)
  • Serial Numbers – Each file is assigned a serial number which is used to ensure no files are missing or inappropriately added
  • Secure Time – Tampering with the system time clock is prevented by using a global, redundant, secure time source (Stratum Level I hardware time sources
  • Two Copies – Each file and its fingerprint are stored twice in the Assureon.
  • Data Verification – Files are continually verified against their fingerprints, repaired using their copies and safeguarded by RAID disk arrays for days or decades

Scalability and High Availability

  • Remote Replication – Two active Assureon systems can continuously replicate to each other to protect against a site failure
  • Failover/failback – Native active/active replication protects against site disasters with automatic read failover and manual write failover
  • Performance & Capacity – Scale capacity up to multiple petabytes and add performance by using multiple Assureon archive storage systems together
  • InfiniBand – Optional High Speed Assureon with InfiniBand connectivity provides blazingfast retrieval of data from the Assureon archive

Privacy

  • Separation of Data – Assureon provides complete separation of data between departments or projects using logical and physical separation as well as separation through the use of multiple AES-256 encryption keys
  • Encryption – Files can be AES-256 encrypted. Keys for a replicated Assureon are stored safely at 4 sites by the integrated key management system. A nominal annual key management subscription is required
  • Authentication – Users are authenticated with Active Directory or digital certificates
  • Audit Trails – Audit trails report on file access and denied access attempts

Regulatory and Corporate Compliance

  • Government Regulations – Meet regulatory mandates (e.g., Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP), SOX, SEC-17, HIPAA, GLBA and PCI DSS)
  • Data Retention – Easily create retention rules and associate them with unstructured data directories or file types
  • Legal Hold – A legal hold can be easily placed on any set of files, overriding their original retention periods until the hold is removed
  • One System – Data sets can be retained for a period of time that can be extended but not shortened. Other data sets can be assigned a flexible retention period that can be lengthened or shortened to accommodate both needs in the organization
  • Data Deletion – Industry-leading single-pointdeletion deletes all copies by destroying the encryption key for the file and deleting all copies of the file. Optional DoD wipe of the drive is also available on a per-object granularity

Easy to Manage

  • Automatic Archive – Assureon Windows Client moves files from Windows Servers to the Assureon and can leave the original file in place or optionally leave a shortcut behind
  • NAS (NFS/CIFS) – Assureon Edge presents a CIFS/NFS NAS interface to users and applications and stores all files on Assureon. Both replicated and Clustered NAS configurations are available
  • Fast, Easy Deployment – The Assureon Client can be installed on Windows Server 2003 or 2008 with no reboot required. Once the archiving policies are established, files and folders are archived, completely transparent to applications and users
  • Global Management – Single pane-of-glass management of all local and remote Assureon
  • Utmost Data Protection – Protecting data with Assureon has many advantages over traditional backups including WORM, single file deletion, greater reliability and availability, and near instantaneous restores to dramatically reduced RTO
  • Authentication – Assureon uses Microsoft Active Directory for authentication in the enterprise and can preserve folderlevel NTFS permissions; it can also use certificates for authentication in Linux or Unix environments, standalone Windows servers or when it is used for a multi-tenancy cloudbased online archive
  • Reports – Standard reports keep track of storage usage for bill back of cloud services customers or within an individual customer bill back for projects or departments
  • Four levels of monitoring – Automated monitoring via system state thresholds, node events, Assureon Client and self-healing file integrity and availability audits
  • Lights-out Management – Self-managing Assureon issues alerts when something needs attention

Easy to Use

  • Non-disruptive– Users and applications do not need to change to work with Assureon. An application running on a Windows 2003 or 2008 server can have its data securely archived, freeing up primary storage while the application is in production
  • Prior Versions – Prior versions of files are easily retrieved by administrators
  • Assureon Explorer – A web-based GUI makes it easy to search the entire archive with role-based restrictions for instant access. Metadata search is included with all Assureon systems. Optional file content indexing and searching is available as an Assureon Content Index Search node for typical files such as office, textual PDF files, text files, html files, xml files, etc.

Efficient

  • Free Primary Storage – Files moved to Assureon free up primary storage
  • Reduce Backups – Archived folders can be removed from the backup stream, significantly reducing the size of full backups. The result is a very fast return on investment based on savings of labor, hardware, media and time
  • Fast Restores – Hyper speed restores replace small shortcuts rather than the actual file contents to meet even the toughest Recovery Time Objectives (RTO)
  • Power Savings – AutoMAID energy saving technology reduces power consumption by up to 60% while maintaining fast response
  • Less Space Needed – Single-instance storage technology eliminates duplicate files, saving 20-60% on typical mid-sized organization’s Assureon capacity requirements

Cloud-Ready

  • Multi-tenancy – Multi-tenancy features enable service providers to offer highly secure Archive-as-a-Service with logical, physical and encryption data separation
  • Online Archive – An on-premise Assureon can replicate to a cloud-based Assureon powered archive service. Assureon supports one-to-one and manyto- one replication

With the growth of data and the larger question looming, can I erase some of the older data?

We all have been faced with this problem. Personally it can be an email(s) or perhaps a duplicate photograph, is it really a duplicate?

On occasion it simply is easier to purchase more capacity when we just don’t know what the next step will be. Recently we worked with a client that just needed more capacity, sure we could dig down and figure if there was a better option. However as I said, on occasion we just must purchase more storage.

Should you need either more SAN, NAS or both contact us at Sunstar Company.

According to the Active Archive Alliance, nearly 250 million Linear Tape Open (LTO) tape cartridges have been shipped since the format’s inception. (100,000 PB of data on LTO.)

The realities of a Big Data world and the advances in tape technology, density, reliability and usability have brought the realization to many that we should not be too hasty to forgo tape.

Tape is returning to some organizations that dumped it a while back.

Look Beyond Backup

Most people think of tape as a medium for backup. While it can serve that function well, it has a far broader function these days. With so much data around, the pressure on backup windows needs to be eased by the establishment of an archive.

“Stop thinking about tape just as a backup solution, and instead think differently about storage of unstructured file content,” said Eric Bassier, Senior Director, Product Management, Quantum. “With new tape innovations like Linear Tape File System (LTFS), storing files on tape is easier than ever, and can be as easy as drag and drop.”

Add a Tape Archive Tier

Just as companies found it relatively easy to add a Tier 0 for flash, it is also fairly straightforward to add a lower tape tier as an archive for the bulk of data.

By adding a tape archive, organizations can maintain their existing storage architecture as is and ease its burden by offloading data that is no longer heavily accessed onto a tape archive. By doing so, they can avoid the heavier price tags typically associated with adding yet another high end disk array.

Evaluate Tape Vendors Against Ease of Use

Some tape systems are relatively easy to implement while others can be a little complex – or at least foreign to those more used to flash and disk. So a smart approach is to include ease of use as a priority criterion when deciding which tape product to implement. Vendors such as Crossroads are coming out with tape technology that is said to be as simple as disk to install and operate, and makes it fast to retrieve from the archive.

Use Tape for Large Files

Current video and high-res images should be stored on disk as they are being accessed and worked on daily. But as soon as they are completed, they need to be moved off high-end production systems.

Tape for Really Big Data

There is big data and then there is Big Data.

presently you can store more than 300 Blu-ray quality movies on one LTO-6 2.5 TB cartridge, in the future, an LTO-10 cartridge will hold over 14,400 Blu-ray movies.

Use Tape to Lower Storage Costs

There is no question that a LTFS-based ‘Tape as NAS  will cost significantly less than a disk only solution over a 10-year period.

Let me get straight to the point.

The sheer volume and variety of ways in which data can be breached is daunting, including: silent data corruption due to hardware failure and software failure, malicious attacks from cybercriminals or human error such as accidental file deletion or overwriting by employees, etc. Yet for all too many data center managers, their response to these threats seems to be a
strategy based on hope.

Unless we can answer the following four critical questions, the odds are that the data protection strategy is tantamount to just hoping that nothing goes wrong:

  1. Do you know if all your files are in the “backup” or archive?
  2. Is there a copy of all your flies at your remote site?
  3. What is the health (integrity) of your files at each site?
  4. If they are different which one is correct?

The Assureon will allow your Data Center Manager to state with confidence that “your archived data is safe and has integrity”.

The Nexsan Assureon™ is an archive system that is ideal for primary storage optimization, regulatory and corporate compliance, and the secure, long-term retention of files.

Assureon offloads data from primary storage to free up space for active data and greatly reduces the size, cost and complexity of backups.

The Assureon is sold as a pair, active – active and given you the second copy of your data.

The Nexsan Assureon supports:

  • Information Capture
  • Document Image Capture
  • Data Capture
  • Indexing
  • Long Term Retention of Files
  • Data Encryption
  • Security and Protection
  • Date and Time Stamps

March 2015

Unitrends, a leader in enterprise-level cloud recovery, today announced that its Unitrends Certified Recovery Suite™ (UCRS) was named a silver winner in the “Backup and Disaster Recovery Software and Services” category in the Storage magazine/SearchStorage.com 2014 Products of the Year awards.

“We are honored that Unitrends Certified Recovery Suite was chosen for this prestigious award from SearchStorage.com and Storage Magazine,” said Kevin Weiss, president and CEO, Unitrends. “We strive to provide uniquely simple, cloud-empowered solutions that increase IT confidence, and given the advancements that we intend to deliver in 2015, we believe that this award is only the beginning.”

UCRS was chosen based on the following criteria: innovation, performance, ease of integration into existing environments, ease of use and manageability, functionality and value. Judged by the Storage magazine/SearchStorage.com editorial staff – in conjunction with a team of users, industry experts, analysts and consultants – these awards focus specifically on new and upgraded products shipped between October 2013 and October 2014.

Key features of UCRS include:

  • Application-aware hypervisor-level protection of VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix XenServer
  • Virtual and physical protection of more than 100 servers, storage, operating systems, and application versions
  • Certified application recovery for VMware and Hyper-V with automated failover, failback, testing, and RPO/RTO enforcement
  • Unified backup, dissimilar bare metal (P2P, P2V, V2P, V2V), archiving, instant recovery, and replication capabilities

Unless your systems are protected by some kind of mirroring or high availability system, you’re probably going to lose some data when a disaster strikes.

The question is, how much data can you afford to lose?

Data loss can be expensive! There are many case studies that speak of companies that have in essence gone out of business just because of data loss.

A recovery point objective (RPO) is a useful tool for disaster recovery planning, especially when it comes to planning and executing backups. A  RPO is a measurement of your tolerance for data loss and it can help you decide how often you need to be backing up, as well as what sort of infrastructure you need in place in order to support those backups.

Enter Unitrends

Unitrends backup appliances provide point-in-time data recovery and speedy restore of failed systems. But your data protection strategy should stipulate a third component: off-site storage for your protected data and systems.

Replicate your data to a second site – be it to another Unitrends Appliance or perhaps to the Cloud.

California is leading the way in defining how local governmental agencies should maintain official records in an electronic format in order to ensure they are reliable and trustworthy.  The state adopted regulations specifying that official electronic records must be maintained in a trusted system, as defined by AIIM/ANSI standards, specifically meaning AIIM’s Recommended Practices

The regulations, which went into effect this week, give clarification to the legal requirement that has been the law in California since 2000.  Local agencies are not required by either the regulations or the law to maintain their official records electronically, but if they chose to do so they must be sure the system in which the information is stored is considered trusted under ARP1 (2009).

At its core, ARP1 (2009) requires a trusted ECM system to have the following components:

  • A combination of hardware, media and software storage to prevent unauthorized alterations
  • Verifiable through independent audit processes
  • Write at least 1 of the 2 required copies to a safe and separate location
  • Policies and procedures for proper records handling.

Both the AIIM and ISO (ISO 15801 adopts similar concepts) recommendations recognize that there are too many variations for how each organization constructs its system to select just one methodology.  Therefore, those bodies recognize that the ultimate goal is to prevent unauthorized alterations to the records and use that concept as the central theme to constructing a trustworthy system.  Having redundancy and transparency are two additional components, as is the need to clearly state how the records will be handled through the adoption of policies and procedures, so that the staff members are consistently trained and understand the roles and responsibilities.

Unfortunately a greater number of official records are never transformed into any type of physical document, so the regulations do apply to those records created by the government.  Public agencies should be mindful of this trend and comply with California Government Code section 12168.7 and California Code of Regulations, Title 2, Div. 7, chapter 15, sections 22620.1 through 22620.8.  Failure to store and manage official government records in a trusted system could leave the public agency without a solid answer to the question of how it knows the information on those official records is true, accurate and reliable.

12168.7.

(a) The California Legislature hereby recognizes the need to adopt uniform statewide standards for the purpose of storing and recording permanent and
non-permanent documents in electronic media.

(b) In order to ensure that uniform statewide standards remain current and relevant, the Secretary of State shall approve and adopt appropriate standards established by the American National Standards Institute or the Association for Information and Image Management.

(c) The standards specified in subdivision (b) shall include a requirement that a trusted system be utilized. For this purpose and for purposes of Sections 25105, 26205, 26205.1, 26205.5, 26907, 27001, 27322.2, 34090.5, and 60203, Section 102235 of the Health and Safety Code, and Section 10851 of the Welfare  and Institutions Code, “trusted system” means a combination of techniques, policies, and procedures for which there is no plausible scenario in which a document retrieved from or reproduced by the system could differ substantially from the document that is originally stored.**
(d) In order to develop statewide standards as expeditiously as possible, and until the time that statewide standards are adopted pursuant to subdivision  (b), state officials shall ensure that microfilming, electronic data imaging, and photographic reproduction are done in compliance with the minimum  standards or guidelines, or both, as recommended by the American National Standards Institute or the Association for Information and Image Management for recording of permanent records or non-permanent records.

** This can be achieved by implementing the Nexsan Assureon , a logical fit to address any organizational gaps that an organization may have with the AIIM Standards.

Image result for private cloud

Private cloud is a marketing term for an enterprise computing architecture that’s protected by a firewall.

Private cloud (also called internal cloud or corporate cloud) is a marketing term for a proprietary computing architecture that provides hosted services to a limited number of people behind a firewall.

Advances in virtualization and distributed computing have allowed corporate network and datacenter administrators to effectively become service providers that meet the needs of their “customers” within the corporation.

Marketing media that uses the words “private cloud” is designed to appeal to an organization that needs or wants more control over their data than they can get by using a third-party hosted service such as Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) or Simple Storage Service (S3).

Promotion of the private cloud model is designed to appeal to an organization that wants more control over their data than they can get by using a third-party hosted service such as Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) or Simple Storage Service (S3).

Let Sunstar Company assist you to build your private cloud.

Imation (NYSE:IMN), a global data storage and information security company, announced it has unveiled its new Secure Data Movement Architecture (SDMA™) to give organizations a holistic approach to actively manage their high-value data files and protect them from tampering, destruction, loss or leakage through their entire lifecycle. SDMA empowers end users to manage their own policy for protecting their high-value data in addition to enabling organizational control and management policies.

High-value data is comprised of an organization’s critical data files that must be safeguarded from tampering, loss or corruption. According to IDC, 25.2 of the 37.4 exabytes of storage that was shipped worldwide in 2013, or 67 percent, was for the purposes of storing unstructured data files. Data files are being created by users, devices and sensors and are being copied and proliferated across multiple device types, including personal devices such as tablets and smart phones. But there are not any holistic approaches to protecting all of it. Traditionally, applications have provided sufficient protection for the structured data stored within an organization’s internal IT environment; however with the tremendous growth of unstructured data that is often accessed by client applications, this data has become vulnerable as it may unwittingly escape organizational control or be accessed, tampered with or stolen by unknown threats.

SDMA actively safeguards high-value data from hand to cloud and creation to destruction. It protects high-value data from loss, leakage, destruction or resurrection, and manages it through policy-based control and security. It also addresses the need to safeguard data files throughout the data lifecycle, including archive, remote workers, file sharing and collaboration, storage management and cloud and mobile device endpoints. SDMA protects high-value data throughout the broader information ecosystem by drawing upon core capabilities found within Imation’s Nexsan Assureon™ Secure Archive, IronKey Secure Storage and IronKey Workspace with Windows To Go solutions that are in use today. Assureon provides a comprehensive secure archive solution that protects and preserves high-value data. IronKey mobile storage solutions enable users to securely access their workspaces and files remotely while adhering to corporate IT standards, and IronKey Workspace with Windows To Go is a PC on a Stick™ that equips employees and contractors with a portable Windows 8.1 corporate image.

“Security and storage can no longer be siloed. Imation is introducing comprehensive and innovative protection for high-value data files,” said Ian Williams, president of tiered storage and security solutions at Imation. “Organizations can no longer throw additional point solutions and hardware at the problem – we must take a holistic approach to data loss and leakage issues. The Secure Data Movement Architecture solves these problems in a comprehensive way and provides a framework to protect important data files. No matter where a user is, how much data they create or what device or solution they use to create and house their data – SDMA is designed to safeguard their most important information assets with the utmost confidence.”

A recent Imation survey of end users revealed 70 percent did not classify high-value data, highlighting the organizational disconnect of protecting critical files. Organizations attempt to define or dictate policies or deploy point solutions in an attempt to regain control over their high-value data; this has only succeeded in frustrating and hampering the end user’s ability to do more with their data. End users want their data safeguarded, but they also want to be productive when they are away from the office or working with external contractors and consultants. When faced with cumbersome policies or solutions, end users either bypass them or limit their effort to the boundaries placed on them.

In addition, information technology and security professionals are increasingly challenged by the pace in which data files move both internally and externally. It’s hard for them to manage data across all of the physical and other storage devices that data lives on – personal computers, servers, mobile devices and/or the cloud – and to keep that data from being lost or stolen. These challenges only get more difficult as data growth continues to explode and more data files are seen as important or mission-critical business assets.

“SDMA really goes back to Imation’s roots of helping our customers store, protect and connect their information,” said Claude Farmer, vice president of engineering at Imation. “This is a holistic approach that will include components that empower organizations to protect and preserve files anywhere and anytime.”

“Imation’s Secure Data Movement Architecture is an emerging real-world solution to today’s unstructured data management challenge. Data growth continues at exponential rates, and this data is an attractive target for cybercriminals looking to score big. Despite their best efforts organizations remain vulnerable to many potential problems relating to storing and securing their most important data, which is one of the reasons information security is the most important IT priority for 2015¹,” said Terri McClure, senior analyst, ESG. “Imation is uniquely positioned to lead the way forward for the industry with its pedigree in storage and security, its Nexsan family of data storage solutions and its IronKey mobile security solutions.”

With over fifty years of experience in protecting data for organizations around the world, Imation has a unique perspective to the risk organizations face in managing their data files. This legacy, along with a comprehensive secure product portfolio and over fifty data security patents and patents pending, demonstrate Imation’s mission of safeguarding data across today’s broader storage.

Features

Benefits

Assureon Client Copies or moves files from Windows onto the Assureon, leaving a small shortcut file behind
Hyper speed Restores Because restores only require the shortcut files to be restored, time is significantly reduced
CIFS/NFS NAS Interfaces via Assureon Edge Easy to use for all Windows and UNIX/Linux users and applications without changes being required. No development or use of special APIs are needed
Fingerprinting When a file or object is archived, it is fingerprinted, so its history and contents cannot be altered after the fact (WORM)
Encryption Each file can be optionally encrypted with a unique AES-256 encryption key to ensure security. Three copies of the key exist: one onsite and two at separate remote managed locations
File Integrity Checks Files are stored twice, and a background process continually scans files and repairs them, using their copies even if they are not being accessed, if necessary

At some point in time a backup solution will be deployed in all organizations. Sure there is a wide choice of offerings and we are not just talking about disk or tape.  For the most part a number of vendors are required for a backup solution to be deployed.

More likely both software and hardware will be required. This works but what we at Sunstar have learned over the years that in time, more challenges arise. Operating Systems get updated or changed, hardware is replaced and then there is the added headache that support must be available from both the software and hardware vendor.

It is for these reasons that many of our clients have opted to an “all in one” solution.  Unitrends is one of our “go to vendors” when a client will best be suited by an all in solution.

There is a difference between Backup and Archive Solutions

BACKUP

  • A backup refers to a copy of data that may be used to restore the original original in the event that the latter is lost or damaged beyond repair.
  • This is your “go to” in the case of data loss.

ARCHIVE

  • An archive refers to a single or a collection of historical records specifically selected for long term retention and future reference.
  • Typically this data is seldom reviewed.

Need guidance, call (310) 330-2900 or (800) 663-5523, or

Can you guarantee the integrity of your data in the backup or archive?

  1. How do you know if all your files are in the backup or archive?
  2. How do you know if there is a copy of all your files at your remote site?
  3. What is the health (integrity) of your files at each site?
  4. If they are different which one is correct?

There are very few solutions in the market-place that can say with certainty that the integrity of your data is indeed there.

For True Data integrity take advantage of the features of the Nexsan Assureon

assureon web

  1. Protect your high-value data and fulfill all corporate governance and government regulatory needs with constant data verification.
  2. Users are authenticated with Active Directory or with digital certificates to ensure they can only get to files for which they are authorized, and audit trails report on user’s activities such as file accesses and denials. Legal holds can be easily placed on any set of files, overriding their original retention periods.
  3. Two copies of all files, along with their fingerprints, are stored on separate RAID disk sets.
  4. Two Nexsan Assureon systems can be replicated to each other to protect against a site failure.
  5. Files are continually verified against their fingerprint, automatically repaired by their copies, and safeguarded by RAID disk arrays to ensure the utmost file protection and integrity.
  6. Native active/active replication protects against site disasters with automatic failover, while delivering increased performance over active/passive systems.

IBM 3588-F4A-LTO4 Tape Drive

.Please call (800) 663-5523 for a price and more information

Looking to sell IBM Library LTO4 tape drives.

Sunstar Company just received a shipment of a couple of hundred of these drives – all full height, to be sold with warranty. Yes we are in the process of testing and based on pre4milimary results (35%) it looks as if this batch is very clean.

The IBM System Storage™ TS1040 (machine type 3588, Model F4A) is designed to be installed in an IBM System Storage TS3500 Tape Library (machine type 3584) to offer high capacity and performance for the midrange open systems environment.

This model incorporates the new Linear Tape-Open (LTO) IBM Ultrium 4 Tape Drive, with enhanced maximum tape drive throughput over the IBM LTO generation 3 Tape Drive (Ultrium 3).

It has a native data transfer of up to 120 MB/sec., and supports a 800 GB Data Cartridge.

The TS1040 doubles the maximum tape cartridge capacity providing up to 800 GB native physical capacity (1,600 GB with 2:1 compression).

IBM Ultrium 4 Tape Drives can read and write LTO Ultrium 3 Data Cartridges and read LTO Ultrium 2 Data Cartridges.

Lastly the TS1040 has a 4-Gbps Fibre Channel interface for connection to a wide spectrum of open system servers.

Sunstar Company can help with the movement of your data!

At some point in time a business will choose to take advantage of more efficient storage technologies. The result; move physical blocks of data from one tape or disk to another, often using virtualization techniques.

The data format and content itself will not usually be changed in the process and can normally be achieved with minimal or no impact to the layers above.

Database migration

It may be necessary to move from one database vendor to another, or to upgrade the version of database software being used. The latter case is less likely to require a physical data migration, but this can happen with major upgrades. In these cases a physical transformation process may be required since the underlying data format can change significantly. This may or may not affect behavior in the applications layer, depending largely on whether the data manipulation language or protocol has changed – but modern applications are written to be agnostic to the database technology so that a change from Sybase, MySQL, DB2 or SQL Server to Oracle should only require a testing cycle to be confident that both functional and non-functional performance has not been adversely affected.

Application migration

Changing application vendor – for instance a new CRM or ERP platform – will inevitably involve substantial transformation as almost every application or suite operates on its own specific data model. Further, to allow the application to be sold to the widest possible market, commercial off-the-shelf packages are generally configured for each customer using metadata. Application programming interfaces (APIs) are supplied to protect the integrity of the data they have to handle. Use of the API is normally a condition of the software warranty, although a waiver may be allowed if the vendor’s own or certified partner professional services and all tools are used.

Hybrid Storage  is defined as a combination of solid-state disk (SSD) and hard disk drives (HDD) in a single storage system.

Two approaches; the first being the more common method of placing SSD drives behind the controller as a capacity tier within the storage system. In the case of Nexsan, their E Series, fits this option should the system be configured with a mix of SSD and spinning disk such as the SAS and Near-line SAS drives.

This  second approach is to use SSD to increase the cache memory pool so that I/Os are accelerated before they go through the controller to the back-end disk drives. The larger the cache memory pool, the greater the likelihood of getting a cache hit without having to access the back-end disks—which results in greater application performance.

Reliable High Density Storage Arrays Turbocharged for High Performance

Sunstar Company, Inc

Can you afford to loose your data?

None of us wish to loose data, and hopefully we backup our data on a regular basis. For many of us we find that we tend to be backing up the same data time and time again,

Ask yourself the following. How much of your Corporate Data changes be it on a daily, weekly or monthly basis? For many of us not that much?

Surely if we archive this data, data that has not changed in a long time, we should be able to achieve the following:

  1. Know that we can retrieve this “stagnant” data at any time should we need to review it.
  2. Free up capacity on our primary storage.
  3. Reduce the backup.

This applies if you need to archive unstructured data, or just old data that is never looked at, or those “old” emails.

There are a number of offerings to consider from Sunstar Company.

  1. Archive to disk – a truce archive such as the Nexsan Assureon.
  2. Archive to disk or tape – Crossroads StrongBox
  3. Archive email to Barracuda’s Message Archiver (physical appliance) or take advantage of Archive One (software), now a Barracuda Company.

We have experience with all these solutions. Please reach out to us here at Sunstar Company to learn more: Call (800) 663-5523

Oracle Corp

Oracle has released the StorageTek T10000D enterprise tape drive with 8.5 TB of native capacity and a data transfer rate of 252 MB/s. It is backward read compatible for the three previous generations of this product.

It has 54 percent more capacity per cartridge compared to the previous generation. The company touts it as the first tape drive with support for both 16 Gb/s Fibre Channel (FC) and 10 Gb/s Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE). Users can drag-and-drop multiple tape volumes onto a single StorageTek T10000D cartridge.

“Oracle’s new StorageTek T10000D tape drive is the fastest and highest capacity drive available,” said James Cates, Vice President, Hardware Development, Oracle. “Customers can use it to accelerate massive consolidation of long-term archives, improve data center efficiency, and lower TCO.”

IBM

IBM has released the TS1150 enterprise drive with a native data rate of 360 MB/sec, up about 50% from the previous version (TS1140). It has a capacity of 10 TB per cartridge.

The company has also been busy with the release of LTFS LE version 2.1.4 (Linear Tape File System) which now supports non-IBM tape libraries. And IBM has been working with Quantum and HP on the future of tape with a roadmap they plan to extend to Linear Tape Open (LTO) generations 9, 10 and beyond.

The guidelines these companies have come up with plan to achieve compressed capacities of 62.5 TB for LTO-9 and 120 TB for generation LTO-10. They also plan to push the envelope with compressed transfer rates reaching as high as 2,750 MB/second for LTO-10.

HP

HP has released StoreOpen Automation to simplify the process of using Linear Tape File System (LTFS). LTFS makes tape file-based and easier to use. In addition, it lets users use standard file operations on tape media for actions such as accessing, managing and sharing files. This is done using an interface that behaves similarly to a hard disk. The latest release extends its support to Windows. Previously it was available for Mac and Linux.  This extends LTFS functionality by presenting a tape library and its cartridges as a collection of folders.

Fujifilm Recording Media USA

Fujifilm may not be the first name on anyone’s lips when they think of storage media. Yet the company had made over 100 million Linear Tape Open (LTO) Ultrium data cartridges (53 exabytes) since they were released at the turn of the millennium.

Fujifilm also demonstrated data density levels of 85.9 Gb/in2 on linear magnetic tape using Fujifilm’s NanoCubic and Barium Ferrite particle technologies. This is part of the overall tape roadmap to continue to make it possible to product bigger and bigger LTO cartridges.

“This equates to a standard LTO cartridge capable of storing 154 terabytes of uncompressed data,” said Peter Faulhaber, President of FUJIFILM Recording Media U.S.A. “Together with IBM, we have been able to create the basis for extraordinary data density on tape that is fast, cost effective and energy efficient.”

Crossroads

Crossroads partners with FujiFilm to provide the StrongBox, which has the aim of making tape as simple to use as disk. StrongBox is said to provide the economics of tape with speed and simplicity of disk.

“We call this Capacity Defined Storage, using the right amount of disk/SSD with the right amount of tape,” said David Cerf, Executive Vice President of Strategy & Business Development, Crossroads. “StrongBox has user defined policies to intelligently deliver capacity optimized storage for unstructured data to ensure optimized performance at the lowest cost per gigabyte.

Quantum

Quantum has introduced StorNext PRO Production. It delivers production, review, archive and LTFS sharing in one system, and is said to offer high capacity and performance.

“This solution integrates Quantum tape technology as part of customer workflows for video content production and archiving,” said Eric Bassier, Senior Director, Product Management, Quantum. “This is a great example of a market where the use of tape is not declining – in fact it is growing.”

broken_drive

Technology’s given us some amazing tools to tinker with, but sometimes those tools fail. Maybe your car won’t start while trying to leave for work or your game console freezes after spending two hours reaching that final boss – it happens.

As reliable as your hard drive may be, it can fail. In fact, 140,000 hard drives fail every week.

“Human error accounts for 29% of all data loss.”

The infographic below gives some interesting stats of top causes behind a hard drive failure. Like with most technology, failure can be in an instant or something that happens over time. As you would with any piece of machinery or equipment, you need to take the right measures to protect your gear to keep it working properly. Fortunately hard drives don’t require heavy maintenance but as the graphic states, “Failure may be total, progressive, or limited.” Knowing this, it’s a good idea to have a solid backup plan.

Purpose-built physical backup appliances for enterprise-class virtual, deep virtual, physical protection, and unified computer protection.

Companies are facing unrelenting data growth, increased server virtualization, and new silos of high performance physical server applications. This data growth places demands on business such as aggressive Recovery Point Objectives (RPO), Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

The good news is that Unitrends Recovery 714S, perfect for small to medium-sized businesses are well suited pose-built to meet these challenges.

1U Form factor unit, supporting  byte- level deduplication, enhanced AES-NI encryption and 128 GB of tiered cache Solid State Disk for improved backup performance, fast restore and recovery.

Recovery 714S

The Recovery-714S supports 8 TB of raw storage capacity organized in a RAID-10 configuration with hot-swap user-replaceable drives, comprehensive data protection and recovery and cloud-empowered disaster recovery and business continuity for comprehensive recovery assurance.

One of our client has a number of these Unitrends Appliances in locations around the USA and world. These appliances are backing up all their data and in many instances replicating to another branch office. In 2014, the Head Office for this client was left with no alternative but to restore all their data from their appliance due to corruption by a virus. The process was seemless and in a mere 4 hours all the data was restored.

Many Thanks

80 Percent of data on primary storage is unstructured and never changes or changes infrequently. This data can be moved easily and transparently to a more cost-effective archive storage platform.

With the Nexsan Assureon Archive Solution from Imation, data can be moved one time and recalled as needed. With the assistance of shortcuts the original disk becomes a cache for the data that has been moved off to the Assureon, reclaiming existing disk space.

. When considering the various solutions, IT managers should assess how each of the solutions will:

The implementation of an Assureon Archive Solution enables IT managers to reduce the size of their backups and the time required for their backups. It enables the elimination of two to three storage tiers while retaining performance. Primary storage growth can also be eliminated while retaining full access to all of the data with an Assureon Archive Solution.

Features and Benefits

Integrity

Fingerprints

– Each time a file is saved, a unique fingerprint is generated using both an MD5 and SHA1 hash of its contents and metadata, so history and contents cannot be altered after the fact (WORM storage)

Serial Numbers

– Each file is assigned a serial number which is used to ensure no files are missing or inappropriately added

Secure Time

– Tampering with the system time clock is prevented by using a global, redundant, secure time source (Stratum Level I hardware time sources

Two Copies

– Each file and its fingerprint are stored twice in the Assureon. The second copy is either stored in a separate RAID disk set in the same Assureon or on a remote Assureon

Data Verification

– Files are continually verified against their fingerprints, repaired using their copies and safeguarded by RAID disk arrays for days or decades

Scalability and High Availability

Remote Replication

– Two active Assureon systems can continuously replicate to each other to protect against a site failure

Failover/failback

– Native active/active replication protects against site disasters with automatic read failover and manual write failover

Authentication

– Users are authenticated with Active Directory or digital certificates

Audit Trails

– Audit trails report on file access and denied access attempts

Compliance

Data Retention

– Easily create retention rules and associate them with unstructured data directories or file types

Legal Hold

– A legal hold can be easily placed on any set of files, overriding their original retention periods until the hold is removed

One System

– Data sets can be retained for a period of time that can be extended but not shortened. Other data sets can be assigned a flexible retention period that can be lengthened or shortened to accommodate both needs in the organization

Businesses and organizations are recognizing the value of active archives in addressing their overall long-term storage needs.

Here’s a look at what’s to come according to some of the industry’s top storage experts:

Advanced Data Tape Will Carry More of the Storage Load
With all th innovation occurring in the tape market, the pieces are in place for tape solutions to expand their presence in the data center and carry more of the storage load in 2015. The timing could not be better as users struggle with increasing data loads and limited budgets. Innovations like LTFS, barium ferrite, tape NAS, Flape (flash + tape), tape in the cloud, high capacity formats and extended roadmaps are coming together to provide solutions for data protection and active archiving.

There Will Be Increased Adoption of Storage Tiers
The need for large-scale data capacity is driving the implementation of an increasing number of tiers of storage across a growing number of organizations. There will be an increase in tier 0 with a tidal wave of flash adoption for the fastest form of storage as well as a multi-tier approach to long-term data, with the rapid adoption of public cloud and an anticipated swift increase in private cloud creation. Combinations of flash, disk and tape are being used in both public and private clouds to meet custom requirements. An increasingly complex storage environment will become the norm, with specific data being placed on specific storage technologies for specific periods of time with automated ‘data fluidity’ systems controlling the life-cycle process.

Greater Intelligence Between Applications and Storage
Will Simplify Active Archive Deployments
Applications that can be integrated with storage will improve overall storage management by removing complexity and helping organizations to better utilize active archive solutions. Solutions will use intelligence to deliver the right storage to meet application performance while driving efficiencies that help keep storage costs within targeted budget requirements.

There Will Be a Move to Object Storage as an Archive
There is a movement in the industry towards object storage as an archive. Object storage is attractive for several reasons: 1) it is massively scalable; 2) it is cost effective; and 3) it is able to also act as a cloud infrastructure for collaboration. The trend is being accelerated because there are many ways to access an object based archive these days, including NFS, CIFS, mobile OSs.

As the demand for more cost-effective, long-term storage options continues, active archives will proliferate.

Sample of Archive Solutions recommended by Sunstar Company, Inc

  • Nexsan : The Nexsan Assureon™ is an archive system that is ideal for primary storage optimization, regulatory and corporate compliance, and the secure, long-term retention of files. Assureon offloads data from primary storage to free up space for active data and greatly reduces the size, cost and complexity of backups.
  • StrongBox from Crossroads: A network-attached storage (NAS) appliance that is purpose-built to provide online data access, massive scalability, and reliable protection for unstructured, fixed data. Lowest TCO.

  • SpectraLogic : Large-scale, long-term storage and archive solutions utilizing automated tape libraries and disk systems will protect your data efficiently and securely.

  • Unitrends : Unitrends D2D2x (Disk-to-Disk-to-Any) offerings include the ability to archive and perform disaster recovery from disk, tape, NAS, SAN and cloud.

  • dternity:  Dternity is Fujifilm’s new deep storage solution. Dternity, a truly holistic approach to archiving, lives inside your pre-existing systems to provide a simplified and streamlined data storage experience. Dternity’s ease-of-use and empowered workflow allow organizations to focus on managing their data, as opposed to becoming encumbered by it. Dternity provides both on-site and online peace of mind for the preservation and protection of your data.

I feel that it is necessary to highlight a number of what I would call some of the hidden features of Imation’s Nexsan Assureon.

It is most important to understand that when an Assureon is purchased it comes as a pair.Recently we sold a 128TB Nexsan Assureon, the physical capacity was certainly more than 128TB but the client received two units, 128TB x 2. Explanation to follow”

  • Remote Replication – Two active Assureon systems can continuously replicate to each other to protect against a site failure
  • Failover/failback – Native active/active replication protects against site disasters with automatic read failover and manual write failover

Having two copies is certainly not enough.

Every time a file is saved, a unique fingerprint is generated using both an MD5 and SHA1 hash of its contents and metadata. The reslt; history and contents cannot be altered after the fact. Each file and its fingerprint are stored twice in the Assureon. The second copy is either stored on a remote Assureon or in rear cases in a separate RAID disk set in the same Assureon

In addition each file is assigned a serial number which is used to ensure no files are missing or inappropriately added. Starting at 1 to billions. Files are continually verified against their fingerprints, repaired using their copies and safeguarded by RAID disk arrays for days or the length of time you deem as necessary.

Lastly it is not possible to tamper with the system time clock because a global redundant secure time source utilized.

Unitrends Logo jan 2015

Unitrends is making waves again.

Yesterday they announced the release of the 3rd generation, all-in-one integrated appliance models

New to these models:

  1. Faster CPU clock speeds
  2. AES-NI hardware encryption
  3. Increased I/O bandwidth
  4. Scales from 1TB to 97TB of raw storage
  5. 8GB to 256GB Memory in an appliance
  6. 2 to 16 CPU Cores in an appliance.

Solid State Drives (SSD) have been integrated into many of the appliances. These solid-state drives (SSDs) perform as a 2nd-layer of read cache.

When more backups are processed and replicated, data is cached in SSD cache, speeding up read requests and increasing data I/O.

Word is that the SSDs yield a 300% improvement in backup RPO.by allowing more data to be protected per day, all while improving recovery times by 125%

Now we at Sunstar Company, Inc. have sold a bunch of the previous generation of appliances. My clients testimonials says it true. The Recovery Appliances work and have saved some of my clients major headaches.

I suspect that the new Recovery Series will be even a greater hit, better performance coupled with larger capacity will certainly bring about more sales.

Please do reach out to us by calling (800) 663-5523 or receive a quote or learn more about Unitrend’s new 3rd generation of recovery appliances.

Optimizing data storage requires moving infrequently accessed data from expensive, high-performance primary storage to lower-cost secondary storage. This secondary tier of storage functions as an archive, so IT administrators must ensure that their storage optimization strategy provides the same level of data protection (if not more) that they would expect from their primary storage.

Assureon, through policy automation, can eliminate or greatly reduce the size, cost and complexity of backups for primary and infrequently accessed data. Data integrity features like file- fingerprinting and automated self-healing integrity checks ensure that high-value data is protected throughout its lifecycle.

Sunstar Company, Inc. repairs tape drives and tape libraries.

Our clients often assume that a drive is defective, sometimes this is not the case.

Prior to shipping the “defective” drive to our repair center consider that there could be an issue with the media or perhaps the tape heads need to be cleaned.

  • Tapes: Tape drive manufacturers specify which brands and lengths are compatible with their data storage equipment. You should always check your tape drive’s documentation for full compatibility, since unapproved tape brand or type can consistently fail. It is also important to only use tapes of the proper length since some tape drives can use various lengths but others can’t. Tapes can vary in thickness, tension, and particle density and tape drives are designed to properly handle those differences without causing damage to themselves or the tapes.

Cleaning cartridges: You should regularly clean your tape drives by using cleaning cartridges, which not only clean the tape drive head, but also the full tape path. Cleaning will prevent both read/write and tape positioning problems. Use only the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning tapes and follow the instructions. Some cleaning cartridges are only good for a certain number of uses. If used more than specified, they will reach their end and not perform any cleaning. Most manufacturers recommend cleaning the tape drives every 25 to 30 hours of use, as well as after using a new tape for the first time.

Tape drives: Just because a tape drive is new does not mean its heads are clean, so while head cleaning on a new drive is not necessary, it also can’t hurt. If a tape drive was not cleaned according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, there could be build-up on the heads and a cleaning tape won’t be able to remove it. Such build-up, or a drive hardware failure, can cause media errors. If the same errors occur after trying new tapes and cleaning the drive, it needs servicing. You could also try performing the same backup using a different software program

Ensuring continuity is an important consideration for maintaining a healthy and prosperous business. If recovery is ever required by your organization, you would  expect a simple, fast, and ultra-reliable data disaster recovery solutions. more

The process, policies and procedures that are related to preparing for recovery or continuation of technology infrastructure which are vital to an organization after a natural or human-induced disaster.  Disaster recovery focuses on the IT or technology systems that support business functions, as opposed to business continuity, which involves planning for keeping all aspects of a business functioning in the midst of disruptive events.

Prior to selecting a disaster recovery strategy, a disaster recovery planner first refers to their organization’s business continuity plan which should indicate the key metrics of recovery point objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO) for various business processes.

  • Unitrends Recovery Appliance : BareMetal data protection: BareMetal is a technology designed to dramatically decrease the time and effort required to restore a computer to its original state in the event of a system failure.  BareMetal protects not only the typical files and data of the user but also the operating system and applications.
  • Nexsan Assureon: Two copies of all files, along with their fingerprints, are stored on separate RAID disk sets. Two Assureon systems can be replicated to each other to protect against a site failure. Files are continually verified against their fingerprint, automatically repaired by their copies, and safeguarded by RAID disk arrays to ensure the utmost file protection and integrity. Native active/active replication protects against site disasters with automatic failover, while delivering increased performance over active/passive systems.
  • Nimble Storage systems can efficiently replicate volumes to another array at a recovery site by transferring changed blocks of compressed snapshot data without additional hardware or software licenses. This means disaster recovery is fast, affordable, and easy to manage. Nimble Storage InfoSight not only helps you make sure that replication is operating as expected across sites, but also helps you plan for replication bandwidth as well.
  • Nexsan NST series, there is no performance penalty for taking snapshots. Up to 2048 snapshots are supported. Storage does not need to be reserved to hold snapshot data. The management GUI makes it easy to setup and manage snapshot creation and deletion schedules. Snapshots are mountable for testing or other purposes. Granularity is per pool, per share, or LUN.
  • Spectra Logic : Spectra Logic’s large-scale, long-term storage and archive solutions utilizing automated tape libraries and disk systems will protect your data efficiently and securely.

In many cases, an organization may elect to use an outsourced disaster recovery provider to provide a stand-by site and systems rather than using their own remote facilities, increasingly via cloud computing.

  • Some of the most common strategies for data protection include:
  • backups made to tape and sent off-site at regular intervals
  • backups made to disk on-site and automatically copied to off-site disk, or made directly to off-site disk
  • replication of data to an off-site location, which overcomes the need to restore the data (only the systems then need to be restored or synchronized), often making use of storage area network (SAN) technology
  • Hybrid Cloud solutions that replicate both on-site and to off-site data centers. These solutions provide the ability to instantly fail-over to local on-site hardware, but in the event of a physical disaster, servers can be brought up in the cloud data centers as well.
  • the use of high availability systems which keep both the data and system replicated off-site, enabling continuous access to systems and data, even after a disaster

Digital Imaging continues to drive up demand for storage capacity.

Three reasons:

High Definition (HD) cameras produce denser images

Data Retention polices require longer term storage of images and video

Data Replication – multiplies images as business seek to protect valuable archives.

As archives grow, storage performance must keep pace so that valuable files are accessible at all times. more

  • Offload NAS: Data such as photographs, video, medical records, scanned documents, court evidence, reports, experimental results and email messages do not change. Rather than fill expensive primary storage with this data, and then wasting time and media backing it up repeatedly, it is best offloaded onto a data archiving storage system where it will be better protected yet fully available to users and applications.
  • Compliance: General-purpose NAS does not always meet demands for corporate compliance or government regulatory compliance. Data archiving storage is more secure than NAS because all files stored on the system are fingerprinted, optionally encrypted, stored in WORM (write once read many times) format, and protected with a lifetime policy, all in a security-hardened storage system with built-in, multi-site key management and full audit logs.
  • Cloud: General-purpose NAS does not meet demands storing or sharing sensitive data in a cloud. Multi-tenancy storage that allows a cloud storage provider to service several customers securely. more

The data you create, maintain and destroy will have different use cases.

Some of these use cases will involve the near daily access of this data, but in most cases the data is never accessed again until some event triggers its restoration need.

Structured and Unstructured Data.

For the most part, structured data refers to information with a high degree of organization, such that inclusion in a relational database is seamless and readily searchable by simple, straightforward search engine algorithms or other search operations.

Unstructured data, the lack of structure makes compilation a time and energy-consuming task. It would be beneficial to a company across all business strata to find a mechanism of data analysis to reduce the costs unstructured data adds to the organization.

IDC estimates the volume of digital data will grow 40% to 50% per year. By 2020, IDC predicts the number will have reached 40,000 EB, or 40 zettabytes (ZB). The world’s information is doubling every two years. By 2020 the world will generate 50 times the amount of information and 75 times the number of information containers. Computer World states that unstructured information might account for more than 70%–80% of all data in organizations.

Protect your data

Offload your unstructured data to the Nexsan Assureon:

Free up capacity on primary storage.

Reduce your daily backup

This is all possible because the Nexsan Assureon:

  • Do you know if all your files are in the “backup” or archive?  ASSUREON √
  • Is there a copy of all your flies at your remote site?  ASSUREON √
  • What is the health (integrity) of your files at each site?   ASSUREON √
  • If they are different which one is correct?   ASSUREON √
  • The  ASSUREON √ will allow your Data Center Manager to state with confidence that “your archived data is safe and has integrity”.

You stay in control of your data with StrongBox. By leveraging the open standard LTFS technology, StrongBox writes data in a non-proprietary format and makes no modifications to files or metadata. A StrongBox system is not required to read data written by StrongBox – tapes can be exported and read by any LTFS drive.

Protect and preserve data with long-term reliability

Storage is fundamental, but ensuring that data can be retrieved is key to a successful IT infrastructure. StrongBox protects data on multiple fronts so that you can be confident that data written to the archive is recoverable in time of need.

Build a sustainable active archive

StrongBox is the turnkey solution component for active archive architectures in which your archival data remains available without high operating costs or bogging down network resources. StrongBox is energy efficient to help you meet Green IT initiatives, not to mention reduces your cost for power by up to 95 percent.

Nexsan : The Nexsan Assureon™ is an archive system that is ideal for primary storage optimization, regulatory and corporate compliance, and the secure, long-term retention of files.

Assureon offloads data from primary storage to free up space for active data and greatly reduces the size, cost and complexity of backups.

Imation’s Nexsan Assureon archive system is a complete, turn-key archiving solution for fixed content data like document archiving, email archiving, medical/PACS archiving and the general archiving of all unstructured data.

All local and remote Assureon online archive systems can be managed from a web browser within a single-pane-of-glass. The web-based GUI makes it easy to create retention rules and associate them with files and folders. Once installed onto the Windows Servers and configured, the Assureon Windows Client copies or moves files onto Assureon leaving a small shortcut file behind, so user access to the file remains the same. Hyper-speed restores are available by using the shortcuts for immediate access as files are restored in the background.

Users are authenticated with Active Directory or with digital certificates to ensure they can only get to files for which they are authorized. Audit trails report on user’s activities such as file accesses and denials. Legal holds can be easily placed on any set of files, overriding their original retention periods.

Individual users do not change how they work as the archiving is transparent to them. Files and folders, though offloaded, appear to be in the same familiar locations thanks to the shortcut files that are left behind. Once archived, prior versions of files are available with the right click of the user’s mouse in Windows Explorer. A web-based GUI makes it easy to search the entire archive with role-based restrictions. All existing applications work unaltered with Assureon because there are no special APIs required.

Each time a file is saved, it is fingerprinted so its history and contents cannot be altered after the fact. This write-once, read many time (WORM) storage architecture is part of how Assureon meets even the strictest regulatory requirements such as HIPAA, SOX and SEC17.

Two copies of all files, along with their fingerprints, are stored on separate RAID disk sets.

The Assureon data archive system supports both compliant and non-compliant policies simultaneously while competitors require two systems to be purchased in order to provide both. All files can optionally be encrypted with AES-256. The built-in key manager ensures that all keys are safely stored in 3 locations worldwide. Industry-leading single point deletion technology permits Assureon to effectively delete all copies of a file worldwide by destroying the file’s encryption key.

Multi-tenancy features enable service providers to offer archive-as-a-service. This also allows large organizations to achieve strict separation of departments or projects. An on-premise Assureon disk archive can replicate to a cloud-based archive service, which is powered by Assureon
