SCALE-OUT
Scaling out means to increase the number of K-Blocks, thus adding more capacity and compute power.

The expansion linearly increases the capacity, IOPS and throughput. The latency is kept consistently low and is indifferent to the expansion.
Two InfiniBand switches are required to support the interconnect between all the K-Nodes in the array. Scaling beyond two K-Blocks will not require any additional networking hardware.
The expansion is performed online with no downtime or decrease in performance
Existing volumes are automatically redistributed between all the SSDs in the array and can be accessed from every K-Node in the array.
New hosts can be connected to the new K-Block, and the new and existing hosts can access all new and existing volumes.

SCALE-OUT AND SCALE-UP

There is no particular order in which the K2 scales. The K2 can first scale up, then scale out and vice versa. This flexibility removes any compromises of using a storage array that is not tailored to the customer’s needs and datacenter requirement

Similar to the scale-up of a single K-Block, also in this case:

The IBM System Storage™ TS1040 (machine type 3588, Model F4A) is designed to be installed in an IBM System Storage TS3500 Tape Library (machine type 3584) to offer high capacity and performance for the midrange open systems environment.

This model incorporates the new Linear Tape-Open (LTO) IBM Ultrium 4 Tape Drive, with enhanced maximum tape drive throughput over the IBM LTO generation 3 Tape Drive (Ultrium 3).

It has a native data transfer of up to 120 MB/sec., and supports a 800 GB Data Cartridge.

At some point in time a business will choose to take advantage of more efficient storage technologies. The result; move physical blocks of data from one tape or disk to another, often using virtualization techniques.

The data format and content itself will not usually be changed in the process and can normally be achieved with minimal or no impact to the layers above.

Database migration

It may be necessary to move from one database vendor to another, or to upgrade the version of database software being used. The latter case is less likely to require a physical data migration, but this can happen with major upgrades. In these cases a physical transformation process may be required since the underlying data format can change significantly. This may or may not affect behavior in the applications layer, depending largely on whether the data manipulation language or protocol has changed – but modern applications are written to be agnostic to the database technology so that a change from Sybase, MySQL, DB2 or SQL Server to Oracle should only require a testing cycle to be confident that both functional and non-functional performance has not been adversely affected.

Application migration

Changing application vendor – for instance a new CRM or ERP platform – will inevitably involve substantial transformation as almost every application or suite operates on its own specific data model. Further, to allow the application to be sold to the widest possible market, commercial off-the-shelf packages are generally configured for each customer using metadata. Application programming interfaces (APIs) are supplied to protect the integrity of the data they have to handle. Use of the API is normally a condition of the software warranty, although a waiver may be allowed if the vendor’s own or certified partner professional services and all tools are used.

Oracle Corp

Oracle has released the StorageTek T10000D enterprise tape drive with 8.5 TB of native capacity and a data transfer rate of 252 MB/s. It is backward read compatible for the three previous generations of this product.

It has 54 percent more capacity per cartridge compared to the previous generation. The company touts it as the first tape drive with support for both 16 Gb/s Fibre Channel (FC) and 10 Gb/s Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE). Users can drag-and-drop multiple tape volumes onto a single StorageTek T10000D cartridge.

IBM has released the TS1150 enterprise drive with a native data rate of 360 MB/sec, up about 50% from the previous version (TS1140). It has a capacity of 10 TB per cartridge.

The company has also been busy with the release of LTFS LE version 2.1.4 (Linear Tape File System) which now supports non-IBM tape libraries. And IBM has been working with Quantum and HP on the future of tape with a roadmap they plan to extend to Linear Tape Open (LTO) generations 9, 10 and beyond.

The guidelines these companies have come up with plan to achieve compressed capacities of 62.5 TB for LTO-9 and 120 TB for generation LTO-10. They also plan to push the envelope with compressed transfer rates reaching as high as 2,750 MB/second for LTO-10.

HP

HP has released StoreOpen Automation to simplify the process of using Linear Tape File System (LTFS). LTFS makes tape file-based and easier to use. In addition, it lets users use standard file operations on tape media for actions such as accessing, managing and sharing files. This is done using an interface that behaves similarly to a hard disk. The latest release extends its support to Windows. Previously it was available for Mac and Linux.  This extends LTFS functionality by presenting a tape library and its cartridges as a collection of folders.

Fujifilm Recording Media USA

Fujifilm may not be the first name on anyone’s lips when they think of storage media. Yet the company had made over 100 million Linear Tape Open (LTO) Ultrium data cartridges (53 exabytes) since they were released at the turn of the millennium.

Fujifilm also demonstrated data density levels of 85.9 Gb/in2 on linear magnetic tape using Fujifilm’s NanoCubic and Barium Ferrite particle technologies. This is part of the overall tape roadmap to continue to make it possible to product bigger and bigger LTO cartridges.

“This equates to a standard LTO cartridge capable of storing 154 terabytes of uncompressed data,” said Peter Faulhaber, President of FUJIFILM Recording Media U.S.A. “Together with IBM, we have been able to create the basis for extraordinary data density on tape that is fast, cost effective and energy efficient.”

Crossroads 

Crossroads partners with FujiFilm to provide the StrongBox, which has the aim of making tape as simple to use as disk. StrongBox is said to provide the economics of tape with speed and simplicity of disk.

“We call this Capacity Defined Storage, using the right amount of disk/SSD with the right amount of tape,” said David Cerf, Executive Vice President of Strategy & Business Development, Crossroads. “StrongBox has user defined policies to intelligently deliver capacity optimized storage for unstructured data to ensure optimized performance at the lowest cost per gigabyte.

Quantum

Quantum has introduced StorNext PRO Production. It delivers production, review, archive and LTFS sharing in one system, and is said to offer high capacity and performance.

“This solution integrates Quantum tape technology as part of customer workflows for video content production and archiving,” said Eric Bassier, Senior Director, Product Management, Quantum. “This is a great example of a market where the use of tape is not declining – in fact it is growing.”

  • Offload NAS: Data such as photographs, video, medical records, scanned documents, court evidence, reports, experimental results and email messages do not change. IBM TS1150 Model E08 (3592-E08) is the fifth generation of the highly successful IBM 3592 enterprise tape drive and is designed to provide higher levels of performance, reliability, and cartridge capacity than the TS1140 Model E07 tape drive. Digital Images are electronic snapshots taken of a scene or scanned from documents, such as photographs, manuscripts, printed texts, and artwork. The digital image is sampled and mapped as a grid of dots or picture elements (pixels). Each pixel is assigned a tonal value (black, white, shades of gray or color), which is represented in binary code (zeros and ones).

The binary digits (“bits”) for each pixel are stored in a sequence by a computer and often reduced to a mathematical representation (compressed). The bits are then interpreted and read by the computer to produce an analog version for display or printing.

Optimizing data storage requires moving infrequently accessed data from expensive, high-performance primary storage to lower-cost secondary storage. Systems like these provide fingerprinting of data so that each time a file is saved a unique ID is assigned to it. This enables the system to confirm that data has not degraded and that it  has not been altered. The system continuously monitors for data corruption or alteration and provides alerts as well as self-healing functionality to ensure no data falls out of compliance or is lost!

LTFS (Linear Tape File System) is a file system specification that allows Linear Tape-Open (LTO) storage technology to be indexed.

LTFS partitions LTO-5 or LTO-6 tapes into two segments called partitions. Partition 0 holds directory structures and pointers that let the tape drive quickly seek specific data from the tape; the data itself is stored in Partition 1. Applying a file system to a tape allows users to organize and search the contents of tape as they would on hard disk, improving access time for data stored on tape. LTFS makes it possible to drag and drop files to tape in the same way that files might be dragged and dropped to disk.

The web-based GUI makes it easy to create retention rules and associate them with files and folders. Hyper-speed restores are available by using the shortcuts for immediate access as files are restored in the background. INTEGRITY

Each time a file is saved, it is fingerprinted so its history and contents cannot be altered after the fact. This write-once, read many time (WORM) storage architecture is part of how Assureon meets even the strictest regulatory requirements such as HIPAA, SOX and SEC17.

LONGEVITY

Two copies of all files, along with their fingerprints, are stored on separate RAID disk sets. Two Assureon systems can be replicated to each other to protect against a site failure. Files are continually verified against their fingerprint, automatically repaired by their copies, and safeguarded by RAID disk arrays to ensure the utmost file protection and integrity.
