According to the Active Archive Alliance, nearly 250 million Linear Tape Open (LTO) tape cartridges have been shipped since the format’s inception. (100,000 PB of data on LTO.)

The realities of a Big Data world and the advances in tape technology, density, reliability and usability have brought the realization to many that we should not be too hasty to forgo tape.

Tape is returning to some organizations that dumped it a while back.

Look Beyond Backup

Most people think of tape as a medium for backup. While it can serve that function well, it has a far broader function these days. With so much data around, the pressure on backup windows needs to be eased by the establishment of an archive.

“Stop thinking about tape just as a backup solution, and instead think differently about storage of unstructured file content,” said Eric Bassier, Senior Director, Product Management, Quantum. “With new tape innovations like Linear Tape File System (LTFS), storing files on tape is easier than ever, and can be as easy as drag and drop.”

Add a Tape Archive Tier

Just as companies found it relatively easy to add a Tier 0 for flash, it is also fairly straightforward to add a lower tape tier as an archive for the bulk of data.

By adding a tape archive, organizations can maintain their existing storage architecture as is and ease its burden by offloading data that is no longer heavily accessed onto a tape archive. By doing so, they can avoid the heavier price tags typically associated with adding yet another high end disk array.

Evaluate Tape Vendors Against Ease of Use

Some tape systems are relatively easy to implement while others can be a little complex – or at least foreign to those more used to flash and disk. So a smart approach is to include ease of use as a priority criterion when deciding which tape product to implement. Vendors such as Crossroads are coming out with tape technology that is said to be as simple as disk to install and operate, and makes it fast to retrieve from the archive.

Use Tape for Large Files

Current video and high-res images should be stored on disk as they are being accessed and worked on daily. But as soon as they are completed, they need to be moved off high-end production systems.

Tape for Really Big Data

There is big data and then there is Big Data.

presently you can store more than 300 Blu-ray quality movies on one LTO-6 2.5 TB cartridge, in the future, an LTO-10 cartridge will hold over 14,400 Blu-ray movies.

Digital Images are electronic snapshots taken of a scene or scanned from documents, such as photographs, manuscripts, printed texts, and artwork. The digital image is sampled and mapped as a grid of dots or picture elements (pixels). Each pixel is assigned a tonal value (black, white, shades of gray or color), which is represented in binary code (zeros and ones).

The binary digits (“bits”) for each pixel are stored in a sequence by a computer and often reduced to a mathematical representation (compressed). The bits are then interpreted and read by the computer to produce an analog version for display or printing.

Active Archive Is the Lifeboat

We all need to protect our data. Businesses typically have to back it up, and there are hundreds of backup solutions out there. Why then, do so many storage administrators say that managing backup data is their biggest challenge? As data continues to grow, content is lodged in backup cycles, increasing backup windows and spurring the need for more storage and data protection investments. A significant percentage of enterprise data likely won’t be accessed again after it is first created.   

The solution? An active archive with built-in data protection, offload data from primary storage and reduce backup!

Facts:

Backup and archive are not synonymous, but active archiving can have a huge impact on your backup, leaving a much smaller amount of data that requires routine backups.

LTO tape is one of the most reliable storage mediums available, lasting 6 times longer than typical disk life spans. Additional system policies or features like hash coding, media integrity checks and restricted access all bolster tape-enabled archiving’s appeal for data protection and longevity.

Additionally, storing files in an active archive can dramatically improve recovery times. Unlike offline backups, active archive data is available all the time. With client-level connectivity, there is no need for a storage administrator to manually retrieve offline data or recall physical media from offsite.

Plain and simple: Stop backing up fixed content. Store and protect it in an active archive instead.

Systems like these provide fingerprinting of data so that each time a file is saved a unique ID is assigned to it. This enables the system to confirm that data has not degraded and that it  has not been altered. The system continuously monitors for data corruption or alteration and provides alerts as well as self-healing functionality to ensure no data falls out of compliance or is lost!

The Exchange and SharePoint environments are indexed and analyzed. Qualified attachments in both environments are moved to the archive storage system and shortcuts are left in their place, preserving the user’s file access structure. User Transparency

Authorized users can administer their own file system by manually archiving and restoring documents. Automatic Versioning

If an archived document is accessed and edited, Archive Manager Files Edition recognizes the amendments and automatically stores the revised document as a new version. Authorized users can then view the different instances, new or original, of that document. This prerequisite archiving is central to compliant storage management and retrieving files for e-Discovery.

Compliance Management

The IT Administrator can set retention times on documents for complete control of the file lifecycle with regards to litigation. After designating a file with a deletion time, the admin can assign a “keep-alive period” that issues a warning when the retention time is reached and the file is about to be deleted from the archive. Compliant storage media can be installed to ensure the files are not tampered with while stored.

Compliance

General-purpose NAS does not always meet demands for corporate compliance or government regulatory compliance. Data archiving storage is more secure than NAS because all files stored on the system are fingerprinted, optionally encrypted, stored in WORM (write once read many times) format, and protected with a lifetime policy, all in a security-hardened storage system with built-in, multi-site key management and full audit logs.

Offload NAS

Data such as photographs, video, medical records, scanned documents, court evidence, reports, experimental results and email messages do not change. Rather than fill expensive primary NAS with this data, and then wasting time and media backing it up repeatedly, it is best offloaded onto a data archiving storage system where it will be better protected yet fully available to users and applications.

Cloud

General-purpose NAS does not meet demands storing or sharing sensitive data in a cloud. Data Integrity

Longevitry

Two copies of all files, along with their fingerprints, are stored on separate RAID disk sets. Two Assureon systems can be replicated to each other to protect against a site failure. Files are continually verified against their fingerprint, automatically repaired by their copies, and safeguarded by RAID disk arrays to ensure the utmost file protection and integrity. Native active/active replication protects against site disasters with automatic failover, while delivering increased performance over active/passive systems.

The Assureon data archive system supports both compliant and non-compliant policies simultaneously while competitors require two systems to be purchased in order to provide both. All files can optionally be encrypted with AES-256. The built-in key manager ensures that all keys are safely stored in three locations worldwide. Industry-leading single point deletion technology permits Assureon to effectively delete all copies of a file worldwide by destroying the file’s encryption key.

Imation’s Nexsan Assureon archive system, available from Sunstar Company, Inc. is a complete, turn-key archiving solution for fixed content data like document archiving, email archiving, medical/PACS archiving and the general archiving of all unstructured data.

All local and remote Assureon online archive systems can be managed from a web browser within a single-pane-of-glass. The web-based GUI makes it easy to create retention rules and associate them with files and folders. Once installed onto the Windows Servers and configured, the Assureon Windows Client copies or moves files onto Assureon leaving a small shortcut file behind, so user access to the file remains the same. Hyper-speed restores are available by using the shortcuts for immediate access as files are restored in the background.

Users are authenticated with Active Directory or with digital certificates to ensure they can only get to files for which they are authorized. Audit trails report on user’s activities such as file accesses and denials. Legal holds can be easily placed on any set of files, overriding their original retention periods.

Individual users do not change how they work as the archiving is transparent to them. Files and folders, though offloaded, appear to be in the same familiar locations thanks to the shortcut files that are left behind. Once archived, prior versions of files are available with the right click of the user’s mouse in Windows Explorer. A web-based GUI makes it easy to search the entire archive with role-based restrictions. All existing applications work unaltered with Assureon because there are no special APIs required.

INTEGRITY

Each time a file is saved, it is fingerprinted so its history and contents cannot be altered after the fact. This write-once, read many time (WORM) storage architecture is part of how Assureon meets even the strictest regulatory requirements such as HIPAA, SOX and SEC17.

LONGEVITY

Two copies of all files, along with their fingerprints, are stored on separate RAID disk sets. Two Assureon systems can be replicated to each other to protect against a site failure. Files are continually verified against their fingerprint, automatically repaired by their copies, and safeguarded by RAID disk arrays to ensure the utmost file protection and integrity. Native active/active replication protects against site disasters with automatic failover, while delivering increased performance over active/passive systems.

The Assureon data archive system supports both compliant and non-compliant policies simultaneously while competitors require two systems to be purchased in order to provide both. All files can optionally be encrypted with AES-256. The built-in key manager ensures that all keys are safely stored in 3 locations worldwide. Industry-leading single point deletion technology permits Assureon to effectively delete all copies of a file worldwide by destroying the file’s encryption key.

CLOUD-READY

Multi-tenancy features enable service providers to offer archive-as-a-service. This also allows large organizations to achieve strict separation of departments or projects. An on-premise Assureon disk archive can replicate to a cloud-based archive service, which is powered by Assureon.
