Rather than spending more on expensive primary and backup storage to accommodate data growth, move data to protected archive or extended online storage.

Your data can then be accessed and protected on less expensive storage without disrupting your day to day workflow.

As data is moved to archive storage it is no longer part of the regular backup process, so there is much less data to back up and backups take much less time.

The backup window that was out of control is once again manageable. Along with smaller backups comes lower investment.

Consider the Nexsan Assureon for your archive solution. Call (800) 663-5523 to learn more.

Can you afford to loose your data?

None of us wish to loose data, and hopefully we backup our data on a regular basis. For many of us we find that we tend to be backing up the same data time and time again,

Ask yourself the following. How much of your Corporate Data changes be it on a daily, weekly or monthly basis? For many of us not that much?

Surely if we archive this data, data that has not changed in a long time, we should be able to achieve the following:

  1. Know that we can retrieve this “stagnant” data at any time should we need to review it.
  2. Free up capacity on our primary storage.
  3. Reduce the backup.

This applies if you need to archive unstructured data, or just old data that is never looked at, or those “old” emails.

There are a number of offerings to consider from Sunstar Company.

  1. Archive to disk – a truce archive such as the Nexsan Assureon.
  2. Archive to disk or tape – Crossroads StrongBox
  3. Archive email to Barracuda’s Message Archiver (physical appliance) or take advantage of Archive One (software), now a Barracuda Company.

We have experience with all these solutions. Please reach out to us here at Sunstar Company to learn more: Call (800) 663-5523

80 Percent of data on primary storage is unstructured and never changes or changes infrequently. This data can be moved easily and transparently to a more cost-effective archive storage platform.

With the Nexsan Assureon Archive Solution from Imation, data can be moved one time and recalled as needed. With the assistance of shortcuts the original disk becomes a cache for the data that has been moved off to the Assureon, reclaiming existing disk space.

. When considering the various solutions, IT managers should assess how each of the solutions will:

The implementation of an Assureon Archive Solution enables IT managers to reduce the size of their backups and the time required for their backups. It enables the elimination of two to three storage tiers while retaining performance. Primary storage growth can also be eliminated while retaining full access to all of the data with an Assureon Archive Solution.

Businesses and organizations are recognizing the value of active archives in addressing their overall long-term storage needs.

Here’s a look at what’s to come according to some of the industry’s top storage experts:

Advanced Data Tape Will Carry More of the Storage Load
With all th innovation occurring in the tape market, the pieces are in place for tape solutions to expand their presence in the data center and carry more of the storage load in 2015. The timing could not be better as users struggle with increasing data loads and limited budgets. Innovations like LTFS, barium ferrite, tape NAS, Flape (flash + tape), tape in the cloud, high capacity formats and extended roadmaps are coming together to provide solutions for data protection and active archiving.

There Will Be Increased Adoption of Storage Tiers
The need for large-scale data capacity is driving the implementation of an increasing number of tiers of storage across a growing number of organizations. There will be an increase in tier 0 with a tidal wave of flash adoption for the fastest form of storage as well as a multi-tier approach to long-term data, with the rapid adoption of public cloud and an anticipated swift increase in private cloud creation. Combinations of flash, disk and tape are being used in both public and private clouds to meet custom requirements. An increasingly complex storage environment will become the norm, with specific data being placed on specific storage technologies for specific periods of time with automated ‘data fluidity’ systems controlling the life-cycle process.

Greater Intelligence Between Applications and Storage
Will Simplify Active Archive Deployments
Applications that can be integrated with storage will improve overall storage management by removing complexity and helping organizations to better utilize active archive solutions. Solutions will use intelligence to deliver the right storage to meet application performance while driving efficiencies that help keep storage costs within targeted budget requirements.

There Will Be a Move to Object Storage as an Archive
There is a movement in the industry towards object storage as an archive. Object storage is attractive for several reasons: 1) it is massively scalable; 2) it is cost effective; and 3) it is able to also act as a cloud infrastructure for collaboration. The trend is being accelerated because there are many ways to access an object based archive these days, including NFS, CIFS, mobile OSs.

As the demand for more cost-effective, long-term storage options continues, active archives will proliferate.

I feel that it is necessary to highlight a number of what I would call some of the hidden features of Imation’s Nexsan Assureon.

It is most important to understand that when an Assureon is purchased it comes as a pair.Recently we sold a 128TB Nexsan Assureon, the physical capacity was certainly more than 128TB but the client received two units, 128TB x 2. Explanation to follow”

  • Remote Replication – Two active Assureon systems can continuously replicate to each other to protect against a site failure
  • Failover/failback – Native active/active replication protects against site disasters with automatic read failover and manual write failover

Having two copies is certainly not enough.

Every time a file is saved, a unique fingerprint is generated using both an MD5 and SHA1 hash of its contents and metadata. The reslt; history and contents cannot be altered after the fact. Each file and its fingerprint are stored twice in the Assureon. The second copy is either stored on a remote Assureon or in rear cases in a separate RAID disk set in the same Assureon

In addition each file is assigned a serial number which is used to ensure no files are missing or inappropriately added. Starting at 1 to billions. Files are continually verified against their fingerprints, repaired using their copies and safeguarded by RAID disk arrays for days or the length of time you deem as necessary.

Lastly it is not possible to tamper with the system time clock because a global redundant secure time source utilized.

Optimizing data storage requires moving infrequently accessed data from expensive, high-performance primary storage to lower-cost secondary storage. This secondary tier of storage functions as an archive, so IT administrators must ensure that their storage optimization strategy provides the same level of data protection (if not more) that they would expect from their primary storage.

Assureon, through policy automation, can eliminate or greatly reduce the size, cost and complexity of backups for primary and infrequently accessed data. Data integrity features like file- fingerprinting and automated self-healing integrity checks ensure that high-value data is protected throughout its lifecycle.

  • Offload NAS: Data such as photographs, video, medical records, scanned documents, court evidence, reports, experimental results and email messages do not change. Rather than fill expensive primary storage with this data, and then wasting time and media backing it up repeatedly, it is best offloaded onto a data archiving storage system where it will be better protected yet fully available to users and applications.
  • Compliance: General-purpose NAS does not always meet demands for corporate compliance or government regulatory compliance. Data archiving storage is more secure than NAS because all files stored on the system are fingerprinted, optionally encrypted, stored in WORM (write once read many times) format, and protected with a lifetime policy, all in a security-hardened storage system with built-in, multi-site key management and full audit logs.
  • Cloud: General-purpose NAS does not meet demands storing or sharing sensitive data in a cloud. Multi-tenancy storage that allows a cloud storage provider to service several customers securely. more

Nexsan : The Nexsan Assureon™ is an archive system that is ideal for primary storage optimization, regulatory and corporate compliance, and the secure, long-term retention of files.

Assureon offloads data from primary storage to free up space for active data and greatly reduces the size, cost and complexity of backups.

Imation’s Nexsan Assureon archive system is a complete, turn-key archiving solution for fixed content data like document archiving, email archiving, medical/PACS archiving and the general archiving of all unstructured data.

All local and remote Assureon online archive systems can be managed from a web browser within a single-pane-of-glass. The web-based GUI makes it easy to create retention rules and associate them with files and folders. Once installed onto the Windows Servers and configured, the Assureon Windows Client copies or moves files onto Assureon leaving a small shortcut file behind, so user access to the file remains the same. Hyper-speed restores are available by using the shortcuts for immediate access as files are restored in the background.

Users are authenticated with Active Directory or with digital certificates to ensure they can only get to files for which they are authorized. Audit trails report on user’s activities such as file accesses and denials. Legal holds can be easily placed on any set of files, overriding their original retention periods.

Individual users do not change how they work as the archiving is transparent to them. Files and folders, though offloaded, appear to be in the same familiar locations thanks to the shortcut files that are left behind. Once archived, prior versions of files are available with the right click of the user’s mouse in Windows Explorer. A web-based GUI makes it easy to search the entire archive with role-based restrictions. All existing applications work unaltered with Assureon because there are no special APIs required.

Each time a file is saved, it is fingerprinted so its history and contents cannot be altered after the fact. This write-once, read many time (WORM) storage architecture is part of how Assureon meets even the strictest regulatory requirements such as HIPAA, SOX and SEC17.

Two copies of all files, along with their fingerprints, are stored on separate RAID disk sets. Two Assureon systems can be replicated to each other to protect against a site failure. Files are continually verified against their fingerprint, automatically repaired by their copies, and safeguarded by RAID disk arrays to ensure the utmost file protection and integrity. Native active/active replication protects against site disasters with automatic failover, while delivering increased performance over active/passive systems.

The Assureon data archive system supports both compliant and non-compliant policies simultaneously while competitors require two systems to be purchased in order to provide both. All files can optionally be encrypted with AES-256. The built-in key manager ensures that all keys are safely stored in 3 locations worldwide. Industry-leading single point deletion technology permits Assureon to effectively delete all copies of a file worldwide by destroying the file’s encryption key.

Multi-tenancy features enable service providers to offer archive-as-a-service. This also allows large organizations to achieve strict separation of departments or projects. An on-premise Assureon disk archive can replicate to a cloud-based archive service, which is powered by Assureon

OAKDALE, Minn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Oct. 9, 2014– Imation (NYSE:IMN), a global data storage and information security company, today announced that it has introduced a way for IT administrators to better ensure data security in their archive storage. The new Nexsan Assureon™ 8.0 secure archive storage system, which is now generally available to the market, contains features and functionality that significantly boost system simplicity and take users’ data protection strategies to new heights.

In detail, the enhancements in Assureon 8.0 are:

  • Faster access to data – Enhanced search options significantly speed file and data recall making recovery near instantaneous.
  • Call home functionality – New automated system reports are directly sent to Assureon Customer Support so users can proactively troubleshoot and protect their Assureon systems.
  • Concurrent synchronizations – Multiple synchronizations can now be executed at the same time, providing better archiving strategies to ensure data is being protected in a timely manner.
  • Virtual shortcuts and failover using TCP on Infiniband – Support for Assureon over TCP adds failover to a second site using Infiniband™, thus protecting data even further.
  • New user interface – Assureon’s new management interface introduces a new level of simplicity by bringing all the benefits together under one management console. Users can do even more from one simple interface.

“IT administrators must have absolute confidence that their files will be kept secure and contain the exact same data over time as they did when they were created,” said Mike Stolz, vice president of marketing and technical support for Imation’s Nexsan solutions. “With the Assureon 8, we provide our growing customer base with an even simpler platform to securely preserve and access their high value data. At the same time, new functionality provides our customers and partners even more data protection and ROI.”

One fundamental problem with conventional archive or backup solutions has been that administrators discover there’s a problem with data loss only when they go to access a file and it doesn’t open, or it isn’t there at all. If a backup was done after the corruption or data loss, it does nothing to repair or restore a file to its undamaged, original state. In addition, conventional solutions do not have the capability to monitor the availability and health of each file, and manually verifying the existence and integrity of all of the potentially millions of files by opening each of them is a practical impossibility. Administrators are busy enough managing their primary storage and hardly have the time or resources to manage another.

Imation’s Nexsan Assureon is a family of secure storage solutions that solve these problems and reduce storage cost by offloading and deduplicating data from primary storage that is infrequently used or has aged by policy. Assureon, through policy automation, can eliminate or greatly reduce the size, cost and complexity of backups for primary and infrequently accessed data. Data integrity features like file-fingerprinting and automated self-healing integrity checks ensure that high-value data is protected throughout its lifecycle. Assureon’s security features also comply with corporate and governmental regulatory requirements, making it the ideal solution for medical, financial and government organizations. Architected to be automated and hands-off, the Assureon experience allows administrators to focus resources and spending on primary storage.

Assureon is just one part of Imation’s deep Nexsan portfolio of purpose-built storage solutions, enabling users to deploy the right storage products for the right application. The other Nexsan product lines are:

  • Imation’s Nexsan NST™ is a set of flexible hybrid storage appliances that scale to meet mid-sized organization application and storage needs with unified NAS and SAN access capabilities in a single solution.
  • Imation’s Nexsan E-Series™ is a family of high-density, high-performance and highly reliable storage solutions that can be directly attached or networked to workstations and servers.

Active Archive Is the Lifeboat

We all need to protect our data. Businesses typically have to back it up, and there are hundreds of backup solutions out there. Why then, do so many storage administrators say that managing backup data is their biggest challenge? As data continues to grow, content is lodged in backup cycles, increasing backup windows and spurring the need for more storage and data protection investments. A significant percentage of enterprise data likely won’t be accessed again after it is first created.

The solution? An active archive with built-in data protection, offload data from primary storage and reduce backup!

Facts:

  1. Backup – Copies of current, changing data saved in case of emergency
  2. Archive – Copies of fixed content stored for long-term retention or compliance
  3. Active Archive – Seamless tiered storage which gives access to data across a virtualized file system and migrates data between multiple storage systems and media types as appropriate

Backup and archive are not synonymous, but active archiving can have a huge impact on your backup, leaving a much smaller amount of data that requires routine backups.

There is not magic formula for reducing data center costs; it takes a strategic implementation of the right tools with continual optimization of the infrastructure. By moving infrequently accessed data into a protected archive, users can reduce the volume of data stored on expensive primary storage, thus reducing the amount of data that has to be protected during full backup windows.

Many active archives are constructed with hybrid storage technologies, such as flash, disk and tape.  While disk or flash provides the “active” data access, tape delivers low-cost, ultra-scalable storage. LTO tape is one of the most reliable storage mediums available, lasting 6 times longer than typical disk life spans. With an active archive, you could essentially have data stored on disk for fast access, while a copy always remains on a protected tape layer. Additional system policies or features like hash coding, media integrity checks and restricted access all bolster tape-enabled archiving’s appeal for data protection and longevity.

Additionally, storing files in an active archive can dramatically improve recovery times. Unlike offline backups, active archive data is available all the time. With client-level connectivity, there is no need for a storage administrator to manually retrieve offline data or recall physical media from offsite.

Plain and simple: Stop backing up fixed content. Store and protect it in an active archive instead.

While every data center has different needs, we can all agree that shorter, simpler backups would cause even the most organized IT director to breathe a little easier. Watch your total costs for data storage and protection decrease as your environment operates without the latencies and complexities of overburdened backups.

LTFS-300x181

LTFS (Linear Tape File System) is a file system specification that allows Linear Tape-Open (LTO) storage technology to be indexed.

LTFS partitions LTO-5 or LTO-6 tapes into two segments called partitions. Partition 0 holds directory structures and pointers that let the tape drive quickly seek specific data from the tape; the data itself is stored in Partition 1. Applying a file system to a tape allows users to organize and search the contents of tape as they would on hard disk, improving access time for data stored on tape. LTFS makes it possible to drag and drop files to tape in the same way that files might be dragged and dropped to disk.

Users can download software that enables the operating system to recognize LTFS.

Utilize the StrongBox from Crossroads, a network attached storage (NAS) appliance that is purpose-built to lower the costs of long-term storage and protection for unstructured, fixed content that works with tape libraries utilizing LTFS drives.

We have heard it before, tape is dead and that the next generation of disk drives will eliminate the need for tape. The explosion of data re-assures all of us that we must rely on tape. The good news, tape technology has improved significantly, the tape drive of yester year is not at all like the tape drive today.

Tape is expected to continue to have a role in archival storage and back-up for many years. This opinion is held by many industry analysts and supported through continued investments by major manufacturers.

Information Technology managers understand that tape is a cost effective method for archive and off-site backup requirements, both in terms of price per gigabyte of storage and power consumption. Tape is an important part of their overall storage strategy, working in cooperation with hard disk systems. But IT managers can find it difficult to get quality service for their installed tape devices as computer suppliers and systems integrators move too quickly towards hard disk storage.

We at Sunstar provide direct support for some of the largest manufacturers of the technology and take pride in our expertise.

LTFS has impacted tape’s modern role in data storage. But, what is LTFS? And more importantly, why does it matter? LTFS Facts

Linear Tape File System (LTFS) refers to both the format of data recorded on magnetic tape media and the implementation of specific software that uses this data format to provide a file system interface to data stored on magnetic tape.

The Linear Tape File System format is a self-describing tape format developed by IBM to address tape archive requirements. The LTFS Format specification, which was adopted by the LTO Technology Provider Companies, defines the organization of data and metadata on tape – files stored in hierarchical directory structure.

Most important: Data tapes written in the LTFS Format can be used independently of any external database or storage system allowing direct access to file content data and file metadata. This format makes it possible to implement software that presents a standard file system view of the data stored in the tape media. This file system view makes accessing files stored on the LTFS formatted media similar to accessing files stored on other forms of storage media such as disk or removable flash drives.

The Linear Tape File System format is an open description of the layout of data-structures stored on a sequential-access media. These data-structures hold the file content data and associated file metadata.

Data media, such as LTO data tape, written using this format can be exchanged between systems that understand the Linear Tape File System format. Software systems that understand the format can provide users with a file system view of the media. Software systems may alternatively understand the format only to the degree that allows the system to read data from the media, or produce a tape that can be accepted by other systems that implement the Linear Tape File System format.

  • The Nexsan Assureon™ is an archive system that is ideal for primary storage optimization, regulatory and corporate compliance, and the secure, long-term retention of files. Assureon offloads data from primary storage to free up space for active data and greatly reduces the size, cost and complexity of backups. Security features comply with corporate and governmental regulatory requirements including HIPAA, SOX and SEC-17. Stringent data integrity features like file-fingerprinting ensure the file you save is the file you will retrieve regardless of time. Assureon is easy to administer, operates transparently without disruption to users or applications and can reside on-premise, in the cloud, or both

EASY TO MANAGE

INTEGRITY

Each time a file is saved, it is fingerprinted so its history and contents cannot be altered after the fact. This write-once, read many time (WORM) storage architecture is part of how Assureon meets even the strictest regulatory requirements such as HIPAA, SOX and SEC17.

LONGEVITY

CLOUD-READY

Multi-tenancy features enable service providers to offer archive-as-a-service. This also allows large organizations to achieve strict separation of departments or projects. An on-premise Assureon disk archive can replicate to a cloud-based archive service, which is powered by Assureon

Unmatched price point as well as impressive data management and automation capabilities can change how organizations approach long-term storage

Crossroads Systems, Inc. global provider of data protection solutions, today announced the availability of StrongBox® DataManager, the newest component of the award-winning StrongBox shared storage solution for data protection and preservation. StrongBox DataManager is specifically designed to solve the two most common challenges for IT managers: reducing costs and eliminating the complexity of NAS filers.

Pricing and Convenience that Disrupt the Current Approach to Storage
Despite the fact that between 50 and 80 percent of all content on primary storage will never be accessed again, IT administrators continue to purchase more and more disk for capacity expansion.  The new StrongBox DataManager enhancement provides a seamless solution that moves data from expensive primary storage into StrongBox for the most cost-effective archive with built-in data protection.

While meeting long-term preservation and scalability requirements, StrongBox provides unprecedented savings.  As noted in a recent study conducted by Brad Johns Consulting, LLC, StrongBox can provide a total cost of ownership (TCO) of less than $0.003 per gigabyte per month, depending on the configuration.

StrongBox DataManager moves and/or copies files based on a simple, scalable policy engine that gives organizations fluid data movement, all within a single, integrated file system that works seamlessly with NetApp, Windows, Linux, Novell, and most CIFS/NFS file systems.

“Not only does StrongBox DataManager offer the most cost-effective, scalable solution, but it also eliminates the complexity and data protection issues for long-term data retention,” said David Cerf, executive vice president of strategy and business development at Crossroads Systems. “StrongBox DataManager can augment most disk environments, allowing users to reduce their overall storage cost regardless of their existing storage types. Instead of just buying more disk, users can add StrongBox to complement their existing infrastructure. While providing more than a 50 percent cost reduction, it is the first seamless solution that is simple, secure and scalable. StrongBox is changing the way we think about storage!”
