It seems as if at some point in time we all need to purchase some SAN Storage (Block). In some cases we can make do with a NAS (File) but if you need to run a database of some significance a SAN will be required.

So what is a SAN?

A storage area network (SAN) is any high-performance network whose primary purpose is to enable storage devices to communicate with computer systems and with each other.

SAN’s connect one or many servers to storage, enabling the users to negotiate device ownership among themselves and, ideally, to share data.

By deploying multiple servers to a SAN an organization will create a central pool of data , accessible to the client.

Need additional data security on your drives? Dot Hill offers self encrypting drive (SED) capability that protects your data when removed from their original array. Available in 1.2TB small form factor (2.5”) or 4 TB large form factor (3.5”), these SED drives provide instant data destruction via cryptographic erase. In normal use, you do not need to maintain authentication keys (otherwise known as credentials or passwords) in order to access the drive’s data. The SED will encrypt data being written to the drive and decrypt data being read from it, all without requiring an authentication key from the owner.

When it’s time to retire or repurpose the drive, the owner sends a command to the drive to perform a cryptographic erase. Cryptographic erase simply replaces the encryption key inside the encrypted drive, making it impossible to ever decrypt the data encrypted with the deleted key.

A Storage area network, or SAN, is a high-speed network of storage devices that also connects those storage devices with servers. It provides block-level storage that can be accessed by the applications running on any networked servers. SAN storage devices can include tape libraries, and, more commonly, disk-based devices, like RAID hardware.

A SAN must be highly available.  A good SAN implementation will have built-in protection against just about any kind of failure imaginable. This means that not only must the links and switches composing the SAN infrastructure be able to survive component failures, but the storage devices, their interfaces to the SAN, and the computers themselves must all have built-in strategies for surviving and recovering from failures as well.

A good SAN delivers both high data transfer rates and low I/O request latency. Ideally, the SAN’s performance must be able to grow as the organization’s information storage and processing needs grow

A SAN that scales can provide a boost in performance with extra applications by separating high-volume I/O traffic from client/server message traffic.

Any well-managed enterprise will do a cost-benefit analysis before deciding to implement storage networking.
